That's insanely good.  I'm most jealous of your ping.  How much do you pay for that?

Turbs, is your service just bad right now, or is that typical? How do you even play games?  D:

It's just bad right now.  The thing that really aggravates me is how variable my speeds are.  Sometimes I'll get 15 Mbps download and >1 Mbps upload and 60 ms ping, other times I'll get 110 ms ping, 3 Mbps download, and .8 upload.  And then on particularly fun occasions I'll get worse, obviously.  And those fluctuations don't correlate with high traffic times or anything, they just happen whenever.  I had an AT&T "engineer" come out to fix my internet when it straight up stopped working a few weeks ago and thought I'd go back to having stable speeds, but that clearly has not happened.

Yay oligopoly.

This is what I usually get.  I pay for 15 mbps from TWC.  They say it cause my house at the end of my street.  My parents have the same internet plan and theres never drops below 14. something.  Dooshes.

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Termin8or on August 06, 2013, 10:14:23 pm
It's a little convoluted cause I pay for TV, Internet, and home phone....it's about $180 a month, but when you consider phone costs $50 on its own and I used to pay $90 for equivalent satellite TV, that means I pay roughly $40 a month for it, which is pretty damn good if you ask me. I also have no Internet usage caps. It's Fiber to the home.

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Turboweasle on August 06, 2013, 10:24:54 pm
Yeah we pay for a bundle too, TV, phone, and internet.  We're supposed to have unlimited as well, though it's quite obvious when AT&T decides you're using too much bandwidth (which happens frequently since I run multiple Minecraft servers) and caps your speed.  We probably pay the same price and we're supposed to get 15 Mbps, but like I said, that rarely happens.

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Termin8or on August 06, 2013, 10:29:17 pm
Yeah it's a real **** off when you don't get what you pay for.

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Turboweasle on August 06, 2013, 10:32:33 pm
It really is.  And I know my priorities are wrong, but if I ever heard of a presidential candidate/Senate candidate/House of Reps candidate that was for better telecoms infrastructure and the breakup of major telecoms companies (like AT&T), I'd campaign for them for months on end.  It really is enormously idiotic to me that the "greatest country in the world" (as our politicians like to remind us) is so blisteringly far behind most of the rest of the developed world in that regard.

Turbo, you need to move to Kansas City.  Google Fiber FTW.

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Turboweasle on August 07, 2013, 09:03:27 am
Oh believe me, I wish I could.  I figure the NSA is already spying on me through Google and my ISP, so I might as well streamline the process for them while paying less for far superior service, right?

But yeah, I'm anxiously awaiting the day that Google Fiber comes to Mississippi.  Though that will probably be years.  Maybe I'll be done with grad school and can move to Kansas City by then anyway.

I thought you Brits were supposed to have really high speeds. Or is it just that the same speeds are a lot cheaper for you than they are for us in the US?

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Laughing Turd on August 07, 2013, 10:05:53 pm
Oh aha, sorry. I just thought they had outrageous speeds to whatever we might see as fast here.

Anyway, **** ATT man. I like Verizon so much better but at the same time, FiOs is so damn expensive so **** them too for that. I don't have a doubt that Google Fiber is also going to cost an arm and a leg as well.

I think Austin is the second city to get it after KC so if it makes it's way up here to Dallas I'll get it and let everyone know how it is. Before that, I think I'm going to try Verizon Quantum though. Hopefully we'll get better pricing someday.

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Turboweasle on August 07, 2013, 10:07:00 pm
From what I've heard Google Fiber is considerably cheaper.  I mean you're not gonna get gigabit speeds for $20, but you'll get 40 Mbps or so.

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Laughing Turd on August 07, 2013, 10:26:25 pm
$20 for 40Mbps of Fiber would be hella good man. I hope it's something similar to that.

So what does everyone think. What's the optimal internet speed you need for gaming? 50?

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Turboweasle on August 09, 2013, 05:30:09 pm
Unless you're hosting a server, anything above 3 Mbps download is fine for gaming, provided your ping is under 100 ms.

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.

I would have figured that having faster speeds and lower ping would be better, particularly on fps type games on PC. More speed lessens the lag doesn't it?

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Turboweasle on August 11, 2013, 05:16:12 pm
It's dependent on the server's speeds more than anything, really.  The server is what does all of the heavy lifting.  But generally speaking, yes, higher speed = more gooder.

That said, ping is probably the most important number for when you're playing online games.

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Laughing Turd on August 11, 2013, 05:40:40 pm
So then do you think that the people who get 100 mbps for gaming are justified in doing so or not so much? I'd also think that ISP's that offer that kind of speed also have pretty good ping times.

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Turboweasle on August 11, 2013, 05:43:20 pm
It depends.  For twitch shooters and fighting games where every packet matters, maybe that's justified, but anything over 10 Mbps for online gaming is a bit silly.  You definitely want your ping to be below 20 if you're doing seriously competitive gaming.

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Laughing Turd on August 11, 2013, 05:53:35 pm
I figured you'd say something like that. I mostly agree, though I'd still say something between 30-50 is probably optimal for PC players. A lot of people do have multiple things running at once like Skype or Teamspeak, videos in the background, etc., along with their games. I think something in that range would be enough to cover it all and avoid any lag issues.

Title: Re: Thanks, AT&T.
Post by: Termin8or on August 11, 2013, 06:32:42 pm
Actually, some applications use very little bandwidth...take Skype for example, I'm guessing its about 40-50 Kbps max...I didn't look it up, but it uses compression and uncompressed voice is roughly 80 Kbps. If you're doing video then it could demand a fair bit if it is HD, but even video calls are typically 384 Kbps. That's increasing these days though with higher quality standards.

Guy came out, couldn't find anything wrong with the setup inside the house or outside, the line was fine, etc.  Basically nothing happened.

Oddly enough, however, my speeds have been completely fine the day of and every day after that guy's visit.  Take from that what you will.

I'm 99% sure I was being throttled.  It's happened before, just never that badly.  I think the fact that I called them twice in under two weeks tipped them off that I was aware of their bullsh*t.
