Emma (my girlfriend) and I had quite the adventure today at Target. They put up a sale on video games this week. Buy 2 get 1 free. I made sure to show up there just before they opened to make sure I could get what I wanted before they all sold out. They didn't have most of the games I wanted, so I decided to try and beat the system a bit by buying a couple games I didn't want/only kind of wanted so that I could return them and get what I actually wanted later.
Of course, I didn't think it would actually work so I asked one of the employees very specific questions first. I asked her if I would be able to return the ones I paid for and get my money back, and keep the free one. After she talked to other people over the phone she came back and told me yes. As long as they weren't opened, I had 30 days to return them. I just wouldn't be able to return the free one. I then specifically asked if they were going to just discount the 3 games for the value of the third game, instead of actually giving me a free game. She said no. I bought the games and at that point it actually gave me the third game for free. I was excited and confused at how it actually worked.
10 minutes later on the way to another store in Windsor we notice the receipt is wrong. This ruins my plan, of course. We head back to Target so they can sort out the problem with my receipt. The problem was that I paid less than I should have. Normally that isn't something you complain about, but for my plan to work it was an issue. The 3 games I bought were CoD:AW (I was going to trade this back in), The Evil Within (I was also going to trade this back in), and Hyrule Warriors. I should have paid $69.99 for the first 2, and 64.99 for the third, making HW the free game. However, she scanned HW twice so I actually paid 69.99, 64.99, and 64.99. I saved ~$6. Like I said, normally I would be ok with that. Since it ruined my plan because it was incorrect, we returned the 3 games and got her to fix the receipt. I gave them the $6 more.
For a moment, I felt relieved because the plan was back on track. Then we hit another snag that ends up ruining this whole thing. The original receipt I got actually DID give me the third game for free, instead of just discounting the value of the 3rd game from all 3. I may have actually been able to do the plan because they messed up. My new receipt said that the 3 games were all just discounted and could not be given back individually for full value. So basically, the first girl I asked specific questions gave me false answers. I bought the games because I was told I could pull it off by an employee. She lied, I bought games I didn't want and now I'm stuck with them.
I'm going to try and sell CoD and TEW today unopened and maybe make a profit on this by selling them for $120 together, but otherwise I have to go back tomorrow when they open and try again when they actually have some games in (hopefully). I will return all 3 of these, get my money back, and then pick up 3 games I actually want. Bayonetta 2, Lords of the Fallen, and Hyrule Warriors.
The plan was to buy 2, get 1 free - then return the first 2 and get a new set of three. Repeat until I feel bad enough to stop. According to the first employee, I could have. I knew there must've been a problem with it but I tried anyways. Oh well.
Man. That was like 2 hours at Target today for almost nothing. It was fun trying to be a con man, though.

Edited in afterwards: WELL THEN. Everything worked out. I just sold Freedom Wars to a guy on Kijiji for $20, and after he left he told me to tell him whenever I'm selling Vita games. I told him about CoD and TEW and he's going to give me $70 + Shadow of Mordor for them. Woooo!
