Why did they go with 10 years probation?  The prosecution was looking for 20 years in prison, so to 'appease' the victims' families why couldn't the judge give a longer probation?  Is 10 years the maximum in this particular case?

Personally I would be fine with this kid receiving probation if it was for life (is this even a thing?), not 10 years.

By the way, this same kid was charged with a DWI about three months prior to this manslaughter.  Police found this kid drunk in the same truck with a 14 year old naked girl passed out in the passenger seat.

He has experience and knowledge about this stuff and now he has some more.  He gets to reflect on his life experiences in a beautiful resort (rehab clinic technically) in California for two years.  These two years will cost his family just shy of one million dollars.

Also on the night of this fatal event, he went to his local Wal-Mart with friends to steal alcohol.  When they ran out of alcohol they decided to drive back to the same Wal-Mart to steal more and that's when he crashed into a parked vehicle killing 4 and injuring 9.  Granted this info should be taken lightly as I can't find a reliable source for it (reddit pls).

The civil suits that will come out of this will probably destroy this family financially (as it should).  The family and friends of the kid who was laying in the bed of the truck and is now paralyzed indefinitely want upwards of 20 million.

By the way, anyone in Texas ever hear of a company called Cleburne Sheet Metal (in Fort Worth)?  Are they as good at roofing as they say they are? (just personal interest here)

Article full of bias - http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/wealthy-16-year-old-killed-4-drunken-crash-spared-jail-article-1.1544508

Article that's a bit more neutral - http://www.star-telegram.com/2013/12/10/5408563/teen-sentenced-to-10-years-probation.html?rh=1

This 16 year old kid was driving his father's company's Ford F-350 with I believe 6 other passengers.  He was drunk and high on valium.  He was doing 70 mph on a 40 mph road and ended up striking a parked car on the side of the road.  He killed 4 people and I believe 1 of the passengers that was laying down in the bed of the truck is paralyzed.

He got 10 years of probation.  He pleaded guilty but his lawyer explained that this kid, because of his upbringing, suffers from 'affleunza'.  His family is rich and his parents didn't teach him about consequences or discerning right from wrong.

If this kid didn't come from a rich family do you think that he would have been charged with manslaughter and have served prison time?  If the justice system wants to teach him a thing or two about consequences then this would be a great chance to do so.

This trailer is exceptionally done.  Great use of the ominous 2001: A Space Odyssey music and silence.

22  General Discussion / Entertainment / The All-Seeing Eye / Re: How do you guys feel about the minimum wage strike stuff going on? on: December 09, 2013, 10:17:44 am
In the states a server's "minimum wage" is $7.25, but that's only if they make a lot of tips.  The employer only needs to pay $2.13 and then the patrons cover the $5.12 with tips.  If the server doesn't make $5.12 in tips an hour, then the employer has to cover the difference so the total comes to $7.25.

If it was the same in Canada, the employer would pay the server $7.25 plus tips, but they don't.  The majority of a server's wage (70.6%) in the States comes directly from the customer.  I don't think that's right.  The business should be the one responsible for paying their employees.

Now every state is different, but there are many states that have a min. of $2.13.  Alaska, California, Montana, Nevada and Washington are the only states that have a tipped minimum wage higher than the federal + tips.

That's how it should be: get paid $9/hour (in the case of California) and then get tips on top of that.

Lowest server wage in Canada is $8.75 in Quebec.  Many states have a minimum of $2.13.  I don't think that's the same.

What is the incentive to give good service?

Keeping your job. Just like any other retail job.

This so much.  I don't know why people apply for serving positions when they'll give bad service because they know (or have a hunch) that a patron won't tip.  That's just wrong.

It's also wrong that the US Fed Gov't treats servers with a crappy minimum wage, but is it also right for servers to expect their patrons to provide a living for them?

You guys should do something about this.  Send a letter to your governors or mayors or whatever.

This generation of young people (myself included) is way too entitled.  Don't even get me started on tipping (even though I still tip out the bum).

Kyoukai no Kanata was one of the animes this season that I watched like the first three episodes then dropped.  Same with Coppelion.  However I don't think KnK is as bad as Coppelion so maybe I'll pick it up later when it's finished.

I didn't know Kyousogiga was based off of Through the Looking Glass.  I've never read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Outbreak Company is great too.  It's my preferred harem over IS2, Noucome (My Mental Choices are Completely Interfering with my School Romantic Comedy) and Walkure Romanze.

Monogatari I think has only gotten better.  I only wish they put in even more interaction with Shinobu (the blonde little vampire chick).

I'm pretty indifferent to this guy's death as I am with most deaths, but I came across a trailer of one of his upcoming movies a couple days ago.

It brought a couple of tears to my eyes.

yo... nee-tan... what's your favourite anime this season?  I became a fan of the Monogatari series...

Out of the opening themes... this one is the best:

Kyousougiga is also pretty decent.  It gives me a Cloud Atlas-ey feel, and that movie was pretty amazing.  Strike the Blood and Golden Time are also great.  Damn, too many good shows.

Only Canadians are fancy enough to drink beer out of fancy glasses.
