It's the same old plot they've done in Hollywood a million times:  Girl thinks boy is dead or zombie.  Girl has affair.  Boy comes back.  Boy finds out about affair.  Boy kills affair guy.  Boy pissed at girl since the end of season 2.  Boy sets up home in abandoned prison.  Boy starts to warm up to girl again.  Girl dies.  Boy goes crazy.
