But slow and steady wins the race, right?

I would have figured that having faster speeds and lower ping would be better, particularly on fps type games on PC. More speed lessens the lag doesn't it?

It's dependent on the server's speeds more than anything, really. The server is what does all of the heavy lifting. But generally speaking, yes, higher speed = more gooder.
That said, ping is probably the most important number for when you're playing online games.

So then do you think that the people who get 100 mbps for gaming are justified in doing so or not so much? I'd also think that ISP's that offer that kind of speed also have pretty good ping times.

It depends. For twitch shooters and fighting games where every packet matters, maybe that's justified, but anything over 10 Mbps for online gaming is a bit silly. You definitely want your ping to be below 20 if you're doing seriously competitive gaming.

I figured you'd say something like that. I mostly agree, though I'd still say something between 30-50 is probably optimal for PC players. A lot of people do have multiple things running at once like Skype or Teamspeak, videos in the background, etc., along with their games. I think something in that range would be enough to cover it all and avoid any lag issues.

Actually, some applications use very little bandwidth...take Skype for example, I'm guessing its about 40-50 Kbps max...I didn't look it up, but it uses compression and uncompressed voice is roughly 80 Kbps. If you're doing video then it could demand a fair bit if it is HD, but even video calls are typically 384 Kbps. That's increasing these days though with higher quality standards.
