Ohhh ok.  That's intriguing to me.  In my head, a painting takes a long time (hours, days, weeks...), and I'm used to my insta-grat happening in seconds, so it's interesting to me that you have your own.. uh... 'quick' method.

When are you coming to Chicago?  We have hundreds of art galleries I've never been to cuz I'm not cool enough.

Well, a painting can take an hour or a few months, but it's still an advantage to me that the paint dries fast, I hate to wait.
But I'm sure there's a lot of work in photography too, all the post production, maybe using photoshop, and not to mention all the creative thinking and the inspiration before the actual photo is taken? :>

Probably swing by tomorrow. :>
Lol, but galleries in Chicago would be awesome. :|

Yeah, there's more to good photography than just point-n-shoot.  Sometimes it's easy and just comes to you, or you get lucky, but even in luck-shots, you still have to be ready for it.

You should totally come to Chicago tomorrow!  It's supposed to be close to 80° tomorrow!  Errr.. I mean...... 25° tomorrow!  You need some sunshine.

Yeah, sunsh... sunshine, that's... that's what it's called... *books airline ticket*

I don't normally edit my photos, which I probably should, but I do have fun with Photoshop.

This one's my shining glory:

My cuzzie's hands, peony from my yard, my photo.  My cousin actually had this photo printed and framed, and she gave it to me as a wedding gift.  Best present evarrrr!!!  Cheesy

Photoshop is fun to mess with.  I usually just play with the different effects and paintbrushes.

Clown vomit.

You had me but it's over now.

Candles in a daze.

Now how's THAT for instant gratification on a 'painting'?   Roll Eyes  lol

i love that third one val.

and go ahead and use the big words, i have google.  Wink

I've meant to sign my wife and i up for a photography class or something for a while now... ever since I bought her that camera. we just don't have much free time and even less extra money lately. I take a lot of pics of stuff I think is cool but everything gets lost in the hundreds and hundreds of pics we have on the computer. everytime i empty the SD card onto the computer it's around 150 pics, lol. that's what happens when you have a picture happy wife and two cute babies.

I do the same thing.  Whenever I dump my SD card, it's usually at least 200 photos.  I have a tendency to take the same shot over 3x or more, so I have lots n' lots of repeats that I never get rid of.  lol

What I *try* to do is first go through and delete all really bad/blurry/etc ones, and flip any that need to be rotated.  Then I make a folder named "Val's favorite" or "Good ones" or the like and copy/paste the winners into that file... still saving all the rest.

So um, some pointers....

1.)  Lighting.
Seems obvious, but most ruined shots are because of the lighting.  I am not a fan of direct light, so I don't often use my flash, unless really necessary.  Makes people squint, easy to get glares or reflections... dislike.  So, pay attention to how much light is on your subject.  Turn on an extra light if needed.  And turn one on behind YOU not them/it.  If you're outside, you'll likely want the sun behind you and in front of them if you have the choice.  If not, and the sun/light is behind your subject, use your flash.  Even outside.

2.)  Watch your horizon.
Unless you're going for an artsy-fartsy shot, check your horizontal perspective to make sure you're not holding your camera on a slant.  A lot people tend to have pictures where the left side of the shot is higher than the right side cuz they push down too hard on the shutter button when they're snapping the pic.  Hence:  /

3.)  Play with the auto-settings.
I'm sure you have "portrait" or "action shot" or whatever.  Mess with them even if you're not taking a picture of a sunset or a snowman or a palm tree.  I like using the Sunset setting when taking pics of people (when there's enough light, of course).  Sunset normally doesn't have a flash, which can be harsh on skin, and gives we whities a more golden-ish glow.

4.)  Macro setting, ftw!
Almost every camera has an automatic macro setting.  Usually is an icon of a flower or a magnifying glass.  USE IT.  It's my #1 favorite.  But, it takes some time to learn.  To get a decent shot with this setting, there's a lot to consider.  Lots of light, subject cannot be moving (much), and you have to have a steady hand.  The cheater way of using it is to use a tripod & the timer.  Sometimes just the jiggle of you hitting the shutter button is enough to blur your shot.

5.)  Speaking of shaky hands...
If you're noticing a lot of your pics are blurry, and it's not because it's too dark...  It's likely 1 of 2 things (or both)
a. You're shaking the camera as your taking the pic
b. You're not letting the picture *snap* before moving away

Tip for Problem A:  Your camera strap is your friend.  Keep it taught and use it to help stabilize.  Camera around your neck -- Hold it straight out in front of you and pull your neck back, making the strap tight.  Strap around your wrist --  Wrap it around until it's tight.  Taking a shot of something on the ground --  Stand on the strap and pull up.

Tip for Problem B:  WAAAAAITT.  Just cuz you hit the button doesn't mean the image is immediately captured.  I mean, it's pretty effing quick, but just give it like .5 seconds, surriousssly, before you start putting the camera down.  I know sooo many people who do this one and it drives me NUTZ.

6.)  Talk to your subjects with ears.
Everybody.  Babies, kids, teens, adults, elderly, dogs, cats, birds.  It's usually when they are listening to you when they give you the best faces.  One of my favorite tricks is to peek at my camera to make sure I have the right position, and then just snap snap snap away while in the middle of a conversation.  You get some real natural, candid expressions.

not at all. I know some of the basics like lighting, holding still (don't have to worry about that one really w/ the image stabilization. my camera is really bad ass), and some of the other stuff. I seem to have a knack for knowing good angles and a good eye for subject matter. I wanna know wtf ISO is what to use it for and other more advanced setting on my camera cuz it can adjust all kinds of stuff on the fly with the dials on top and I have know idea what those do really. I can adjust shutter speeds, ISO settings, light settings, I can even set it to do black and white pics that only show one color which is really cool. You have a little box on the screen and you aim that box at the color you want to keep in the black and white pic and hit a button. then it only allows colors of that shade to show and everything else is in black and white like your flower pic up above. it has facial recognition so if I'm taking a pic of people it puts boxes around their faces and even blows up the box if they are a little far away so you can see if they are smiling or what not. it's 14.7 Mega pixel so I don't have to worry about resolution pretty much ever. it does wide screen and has a big optical zoom and a really big digital zoom as well. it does HD video which is pretty cool too. It can support up to a 32gb SD card but I only have a 4gb which has been plenty for me so far. I just wanna know how to do all the cool advanced stuff and why and when to use them. I've figured out how to adjust how long the shutter stays open and got some cool fireworks pics using that. I want a walleye lens and a big zoom lens but don't have money to spend on that stuff right now. I'll try to getting around to posting some of my pics some time but they aren't nearly as artsy cool as yours. I'll have to find my pic of four zebras asses I took at this wildlife preserve cuz it's just hilarious to me for some reason. I have a lot of sunsets, trees, creeks, parks, and stuff like that that I just thought was cool and took a pic of.

I think we'll have to just get on skype video chat some time if you have a web cam and we can go over some of this stuff in real time and I can show you the stuff on my camera so you'll know what i'm talking aboot at that time... that is if you're cool with doing that. I want you to meet my wife to cuz she's a sweetheart and I like to introduce her to the women I talk to online so she doesn't think it's weird I'm talking to them online cuz she doesn't know them. Mum and Amie like talking to each other when they get the chance.

Anyway, I am recruiting you as my free photo instructor so don't expect payment for all this. I can offer you favors using my awesome mod powers on the site which can be fun to mess with people with sometimes. I may even write you a song on my guitar or something to bribe you with, lol.  Wink

so, download skype if you don't have it already and add me - lakkus43 is my skype name I think. let's do this.  Cool

Holy wall of text, Batman.

Ok, so...  I hate you a little bit for not sharing that camera with me.  I have to invest in a new one as my old one is slowly crawling to its grave. Currently, it's teasing me by taking pictures without a problem, but I can't get them off the CF card.  The only only way... the PS3.  I sheet you not.  Cord doesn't work, sticking the card in the printer doesn't work, using the photo kiosk at Walgreens doesn't work, but the frucking PS3 can read it.  lol

ANYway.

ISO is basically how sensitive to light you wanna make your camera.  The lower the number, the slower the speed.  The slower the speed, the less light is captured.  The less light captured, the darker the picture.  Follow me so far?

Bright sunny days, keep it low (80-200 or so).  Cloudy skies, up it a little bit (400-800).  Night time, use your flash.  lol

Buuuut... the higher you go the more grainy the photos become.  You ever take a picture in a dark room (no flash) and see how it's got like pink/green/blue speckles ("noise") all over the place?  That's cuz the ISO is probably at like 1000 or 1600 or something and it's pulling in as much light as it can find, resulting in a grainy photo.  Ideally, the best quality photos have the lowest ISO.

If you still don't understand, just mess with it.  Go somewhere and take the same picture, but adjust the ISO each time.  It's the best way I can explain it.  I'd post examples, but like I said, my camera is teh deadz.

Here, ala Google:

Left to right they said: ISO 80, ISO 400, ISO 1000

Making sense yet?

Lesse, what else....

OH, I also hate your camera a little bit for stealing my B&W + 1 thing in color idea and making it totally easy for the n00bz.  I'm not personally a fan of face-recognition, cuz usually by the time everyone is smiling (or the camera thinks everyone is smiling), someone starts to lose it and looks like a total idiot.  And, are you that bad at taking pictures that you can't tell what everyone's face is doing and you need a machine to tell you?   Roll Eyes  I dunno.  Cameras now make it so easy for everyone to think they're an amazing photographer cuz it does all this crazy sht for you.  It's like Guitar Hero.

And I'm not Skyping with you cuz then you'll find out I'm really a man and my peenie is bigger than yours.

But you can still write me a song.  <3

Seriously though, if you have any further questions, I'm more than happy to help you out.  I'm really not as advanced as you might think, but I'm more than willing to help decipher what Google says.  I never took classes or anything like that, I just read the instruction manuals when I get a new camera.  lol  (dangit, now you really know that I am not a man...)

lol, it doesn't take the pic when they are smiling. It automatically recognizes and blows up their faces if they are farther away so you can see their face better on the screen and then take the pic yourself when it's the right time. one cool thing i've found is you can just take a short video and use windows live movie maker to take snapshots from the video so you get the right pic w/out having to get everyone to smile and take mutliple pics to get the right one. just have them all pose, take a short video of them all smiling or whatever and then later take the best frame and make it a photo. cool, huh. and no skype? wtf? fine then jerk if you don't trust me enough. i see how it is.  Tongue

Whatever, fine, your camera is bigger than my camera.  Happy now?  Wink

And Skype with no video would be ok cuz I'm self-conscious like that, so shut up.  But I think I can Skype from my phone or something.  I don't know, I'm not familiar with it at all.

Oh hey, I found an ISO example fer you on my own photos. Cheesy  I very rarely manually set it, but I remember doing it for these.  (took me forever to find. lol  I knew I had them somewherez!)

ISO-200:

vs

ISO-68:

Tada!  Am I making any sense to you at all?

yeah, i totally understood it from you first explanation. i thought it had something to do with light but wasn't sure. go to that link for my camera and see if you can see the dials on top of the camera and what they are for. one is for some  kind of light setting, one is for ISO i think and there's another I can't remember atm. there's also a ton of other settings that are on the dial on the back side as well for the preset settings you referred to earlier. and sorry about the skype comment. i thought you meant you didn't wanna skype at all. I can just send you video if you want so we can talk buy you'll only get video from me so I can show you the camera stuff on the fly while we're talking.

how late you gonna play bc2 tonight btw? i wanna try to squad up with ya since you keep griping at me aboot it, lol  Tongue
