the interface is ten times better. the quality is better. the streaming starts faster and downloads better.
basically, everything about the Vudu service seems better except having to rent them.
the movie selection seemed like it might be better too cuz it has way more new releases available.
If you haven't tried Vudu out yet I would definitely suggest you try it. you get a free movie just for installing so there's nothing to lose.

it's free. no monthly fees. you just pay for rentals like you would at blockbuster or the PSN video service. prices range from 2$, 4$ or 6$ depending on SD, HD, or HDX quality streaming downloads. HD is like 720p and HDX is 1080p w/ 5.1 surround sound. you get a free rental (6$ credit for installing on your PS3) or two for signing up so you can check it out no strings attached. I personally like it better than PSN, Netflix, or my media server because the user interface is ten times better than the others, the video quality is better than the others and it loads and plays the media almost instantly on my connection. PSN usually requires me to buffer the HD downloads for a long time and Netflix has a crappy new release selection. Vudu also is easier to use and offers a ton more info on the movies (w/ preview trailers most of the time) you are looking at. everyone should at least download it and get your free movie. just go the PSN store and go the media section and download Vudu. it literally take less than a minute to download, install and start looking through the movies to get your free credit. it only requires you email address to get the credit. if you wanna keep using it after your free credit then you will have to provide a card number to pay for rentals in the future and you'll need to open the activation email they send you and set up a password for your account. it's really simple and even mum could do it by herself. tl;dr version: download Vudu now and get a free movie or two on your PS3 no strings attached

Dang, I miss-read the info. I thought you meant that you can stream movies for free. :(

right when you load it up, down towards the bottom there should be a box that says " free hd rental " or something like that, just click it, enter your email and right away it will give you a 5.99 credit

Nah, I know about the ONE free credit, but I thought there was a selection of movies to stream for free other than the one.

I downloaded it, took about 10 seconds and scrolled through. I don't know that I'll use it other than the one time I use my free one. I guess If you want to DL movies it's great, or if you want to have a movie to watch the day it comes out on DVD then it's great too. Netflix makes you wait 30 days for a movie, but I'm willing to wait.
I did just sign up for the trial of Hulu+; after that it's $7.99/month. I can do that and Netflix for a total of $20/month and watch what I want, when I want. The only thing that I can't get now is MNF on ESPN (it's not on ESPN3) or the Bay Area sports teams.
We were on vacation for 3 nights over the holiday and we had cable, the few times I sat down to watch TV all I did was channel surf becuase there wasn't anything interesting. So, it's been 3 months w/out Directv and nobody is complaining and the $80/month saved went towards another Ps3 so now we have games/blu-ray/streaming for both of our TV's.
BTW, I looked at a stand-alone Blu-ray DVD player that had built in wi-fi, not wi-fi ready , and the cheapest was at wal-mart for $158 on sale from $249. After store credit at Gamestop, tax and all that jazz, it was only $75 more for the other Ps3 so I got another one.
gee, another novel by GH.

ps3 might have come out a while ago and there are better standalone bluray players now but the amount of other things you get with a ps3 really make it a great deal all on its own. ps3 pack some serious punch for its price. even if you dont play games much you still have all these other media options at your disposal.

Exactlly. that's what the article was saying that I read. The one at Wal-mart came with the built in wi-fi for $159 on sale from $249; still as you said, ps3 is the wtg.
