ok, so I found the WU steam group and I think I joined it.
I can't add anyone though cuz I don't have any games downloaded yet. So, add me if you will please.
I'm going to try out a few games and see if this laptop can play anything worth a crap. It's not a gaming rig so I'm sure I can't play any new awesome games.
Is Age of Empires on here? I have AoE2 CE already. Can I play game I already own against people on steam?

You can put anything you want on steam. But it might be difficult to get the invite system working across steam if the game is not on steam.
Try TF2. It's free and almost any computer can run it. You could test out stuff by trying to see if you can tune up graphics on tf2.
Also I'm PRETTY sure age of empires is on steam.

TF2 was the first thing I looked for and started downloading, lol. Portal worked fine last night at the higher settings... but it had a bit of a slow framerate but not bad. I found Age of Empires Online, but that one kinda sucked compared to the real game. I need to try it out more with Turbo or something. I think I've decided to buy a pimped out gaming PC as my next big purchase. Steam is awesome.

If you're at all comfortable assembling a computer, do yourself a favor and buy the parts (RAM, hard drive, processor, etc.) separately. You'll save a lot of money.
EDIT: And I'm down for some AoE. If AoE Online is free to play I might look into it, but I have AoE II, AoE II: Conqueror's Expansion, and AoE III as well.

I've poked around and know it's possible, but it's not particularly easy. We'll have to use a service like Voobly to do it.

I remember last time I looked into it I found that it www a bit of a pain to set up. I was hoping I could just sign into stream, send you an invite, and play. Obviously, I don't know **** about PC gaming since the last time I played a PC game against someone was in 7th grade computer class playing doom when the teacher was gone.

FUN STUFF. But yeah, inviting through Steam itself only works if the game was released on the platform. You can add the game to Steam so that you can take Steam screenshots, have steam notify friends what you're playing, and chat with friends using steam overlay. But you can't actually invite through steam. Still, Steam makes setting that **** up easier. Cause you can just pm friend what sever your playing on or whatever through steam chat. Number of times I said "Steam" in this post (not counting in this sentence): 8
