Faced with rapidly declining sales and a less enthusiastic than expected reception to its newest handheld gaming device, Nintendo has confirmed that it will be releasing a successor to the Wii in 2012. A prototype of the new device, which has been rumored for the past several weeks, will be unveiled at E3, the video game industry's annual trade show in June (2011)...The company announced plans for the new system, which it dubbed a "successor" to the Wii, in a short statement issued in conjunction with the earnings. It declined to give further details about how the system would differentiate itself from the Wii and existing competitors. "As for the details of exactly what it will be, we have decided that it is best to let people experience it for themselves at E3," said Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's president and CEO. "So I won't talk about specific details today, but it will offer a new way of playing games within the home." The fact that the new console will be playable at E3 surprised some in the industry, who noted that could indicate a launch in the first half of 2012. If true, that would be sooner than some were expecting it, but still not soon enough for everyone. "Nintendo waited too long," says Wedbush Securities Michael Pachter. "The drop dead date they should have done this by is last Christmas. I think, essentially, they're simply coming up to speed with this generation. … Remember, there's already 8 million (PlayStation) Move (controllers) out there and 10 million Kinects. … Nintendo has already lost the opportunity to sell 'Wii 2' to 6 or 7 million households, who have upgraded." Life to date, the 5-year old Wii has sold 86 million units. The 3DS, Nintendo's new handheld gaming system (that shows games in stereoscopic 3D without the need for special glasses) had what the company called a "smooth" start – but fell short of expectations. The system sold more than 3.61 million units, a bit short of the 4 million units Nintendo had forecast..."The aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake is unpredictable," the company said. "Nintendo has not suffered any direct damage which will significantly alter our production..."

I will know in June 2011 whether I want a PS3 with Move or next gen Nintendo. I am also curious to see if BF3 for PS3 supports the Move.

i for one hope nintendo gets it right this time. the wii bombed (face it mex) and it might be really late to catch up but still, ive always LOVED the nintendo games. id love to finally see them surrounded in hd beauty and good controls. i love my ps3 a lot and this console made it likely that ill buy the next sony console. i dont mind have this and the new wii2 so long as the features are similar to ps360.

Sigh.....
How could the Wii have bombed if it's the number 1 console right now? Yes it doesn't have HD or amazing graphics (look at recent PC games if you think PS3 has amazing graphics btw), but it invented the motion control and made the videogame industry grow even more by reaching a wider audience. People who haven't played in a long time or never. It also kept the Ninty faithful happy by releasing huge first party games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, Metroid: Other M, etc.
It's true that online has now become a bigger factor and I can assure you that Wii 2 will NOT have friend codes like the Wii where you have to use multiple friend codes to register people. The 3DS uses only ONE (think of it as your psn name) universal friend code so that's a sign that the successor to the Wii will use a universal friend code. If the Wii has headset support that obviously also means its successor will too. It will have HD graphics since a lot more people have HD televisions now.
Now the lag online will obviously have to be dealt with. Playing Super Street Fighter IV 3D online is great, but it does have lag if you face people from far away. I believe even the PS3 version has lag for fighting games too. It's still too early to tell if the online lag has been fixed since the 3DS only has SSFIV 3D as its only online game, but i'm sure Nintendo is aware of this. I never played an online PS2 or Xbox game, but i'm sure they were laggy too. The Wii just can't handle online like the PS3 & 360, but its successor will. I mean come on, its rumored to be way more powerful than the 360 and PS3! Online should be no problem.
Well i'll end my rant with this..... Just wait until E3 when Nintendo will once again steal the show and reveal the Wii's successor.

I saw this on the news last night, the name of it will be Nintendo Stream, and it will have HD graphics. But I'm not getting it until they release a Zelda game for it. They are so **** late though, they will be six years late for the HD aspect.

I thought I saw somewhere in an article that Nintendo is not even contemplating "3D" games, well as much as I think the graphics for it would be ****... Look at it, ps3 and xbox came in when HD tvs were uncommon.. and now they are everywhere. Nintendo has a desire it seems to stay behind the times and only just barely "catch up". There online is one of the worst things I've ever seen... its lag to **** no matter what.. and they will need to invest in some actual servers this time around or die off..

I don't think 3D is going to get big... at least not for a long time. First, it's way too expensive. Second, you have to wear stupid looking expensive ass glasses. Third, everyone just shifted over to LCD/Plasma and most people aren't gonna buy a newer HD tv just to get a 3D capable one... especially in a crappy economy.
