sweet. I love Ace Combat games and this trailer looks awesome.
I think I'll be getting this. The BF3 trailers have me wanting to fly some jets and stuff. I posted a AC:AH topic under general discussion. Feel free to move to here if appropriate.

No, but I love air combat type games. I used to run F-15 Strike Eagle on my Commodore 64.

The review is good, but it seems that this game has more of an arcade feel than a flight simulator. I'd rather have full control and 1st person realism than a 3rd person arcade shooting gallery.
I'm still glad I got the game and will finally get to try it out tonight.

ewww, assisted flight in dogfight mode? yuck. call me a flight sim purist, but now im not even sure I want the game. go back to the old style AC, none of this bs. if you cannot control your roll in the game i may or may not have to fly out and punch the designer in the face.

I have some helicopter sim which is unbelievably difficult... it's pretty old but apparently they actually used it in training.

I played for a couple of hours last night. I chose the medium level right off the bat and turned all the flight assist crap off.
The first four missions or so were really fun. Lots of dogfighting, an apache chopper mission and you also get to bomb/gun from an AC-130.
Then I got to one portion of the fifth or sixth mission where there are like 10 Russian migs that jump you and they are freaking impossible to kill. If you even lock onto one (and that was a feat) then two or three others will wax your tail. I gave up after dieing about 20 times in a row without a kill. I tried everything I could to shake them. You squadron/wingmen are worthless. They are just there so it won't seem like it's you against the world, but you have to kill all the enemies.
After rage quitting that mission, I tried the online multiplayer mode. That was a mistake. The two modes I tried were 100% chaos. Planes flying everywhere and you can't lock on to anyone without getting taken out by someone else. I guess there is a method to playing multiplayer and I haven't figured it out yet. I would pick an opponent to track, and try to shoot him down. You can never last long enough to get in position to kill. I guess you just have to ignore any individuals and just spam missiles and guns and hope to get kills. I went like 10-28 over three sorties. The last two were deathmatch mode with 16 players and I did a little better.
Up until the last 30 minutes or so, I loved the game. The last mission and the multiplayer were not fun at all.

I've heard it's lot different from the old games man. It's gonna be a rental for me. you should check out the old PS2 games if you can. I guess I should have told you that they aren't flight sim type games.

Ok so this weekend I made it through the campaign mission where you're jumped by 10+ MIGs. Once you take a few of them out, it gets a little easier. There aren't as many left to sideline you. Later, I played a mission where you have to go on these bombing runs and take out SAM stations, tanks and other ground targets in support of some ground forces. This mission has just about ruined the game for me. There are about 4 bombing runs you have to make and you have to fly them perfectly in order to support your ground forces. Once you've cleared the first set or run of ground targets, another run of ground targets "appears" for you to take out. (realistic... not) Again, you have to take them out perfectly in order to avoid having to circle around and make another run. This eats up time and there is apparently a background timer running unbeknownst to you. After a while you get a "MISSION FAILED" message. You also randomly get jumped by two or three MIGs just to make it interesting. If you break off of your run to take care of them, you lose time and FAIL. If you ignore them, they strafe the crap out of you and you die. FAIL. I played for about 2 hours trying to beat this mission and gave up after the last attempt after I had taken out ALL ground targets and only had one MIG left and we were in a one-on-one dogfight and I got the "MISSION FAILED" message. WTF?!?!? How could the mission fail? He was busy with me. He couldn't have taken out any ground forces. It's simply a timer and until all enemy forces and targets are destroyed before it runs out, you FAIL. I raged and shut it off. It's the closest I've ever come to chucking a controller at the screen. Fuuck it. This game is too wrapped around the concept of setting up a mission or set of objectives so that only a perfect (and I mean PERFECT) execution is the only way to advance. I guess some people like those type of games. It's really too bad because the graphics and game play are superb and I love the flight simulation, dogfighting, Apache missions and air-to-ground missions.
