I think he was a very talented singer for his genre. he had a good quality voice and the amount of emotion he put into the songs always made me feel like what he was singing came from something real. very appropriate and effective for that type of music.
was he comparable to a singer that needs to deal with a wider range of music? probably not. i just think that for what he did, he was really good.

I can't stand when people use emotion as a cop out to describe someone's talent. Emotion is nice, but if you can't hit the notes, you can't hit the notes.

Well, it sucks that you can't stand something but either way I'm not going to sweat it. I never said he was the best but I did say he had a good enough quality and when you couple it with the amount of emotion he puts into it, it makes his singing and the issues he sings about all the more enjoyable.
And who said adding the right emotion into music isn't talent? If you couldn't do it right you'd have Rebecca Blacks everywhere.
Can he hit all the notes that an opera singer can? No. Is it good enough for what I need from him, absolutely.

By no means am I putting him in the same category as Rebecca Black, he was good, but Im a douche and i want to start a BS fight just to make people like me more than they actually do.

Am I the only person who thought Staley was just average as a singer? I think he became a lot more popular after he died because everyone is afraid to say something negative about a dead guy. Just my two cents.
yes you are the only person, don't even get me started he was very unique and so many singers today try to imitate him because was the dope doodoo . NEGATIVE = he was a huge fawking junkie and that killed him, no respect there. But please don't say he was an average singer because he was amazing to my ears and he could make just one word last forever with a vibrato that nobody could match

Ok, really this is tough, and of course, it depends on your generation. I have to admit Cornell is great, and IMO, Grohl appears to be the brains behind Nirvarna, but I don't know all of the back story there. I graduated HS in '91 so my college years were all about grunge.
