Different races have their strengths and weaknesses.  Really depends on what you want to play like.

If you want a pure melee who f***s s*** up with a battleaxe or something, I'd recommend a Nord or an Orc, as they're very strong and have early bonuses to Two-Handed Weapons and (I think) Heavy Armor.

If you want something light and sneaky that relies on stealth, Wood Elf or Khajiit, maybe Argonian.

If you want a pure mage, Breton and High Elf are your best bets.

If you want a balance, pick from Imperial, Dark Elf, and Redguard.
