I typically play as a loner, so I don't have many friends.  I deliberately buy a house in Whiterun for the sole purpose of sticking Lydia and any other "friends" I pick up along the way in there, out of harm's reach.  For some reason I can't allow Lydia to just chill in Dragonsreach.

Oh, and when the guard inevitably came to arrest me, I could have just told him to eff off seeing as I was Thane of Whiterun, but instead I payed the bounty.  I just can't bring myself to hurt anyone in this game.  I guess it's because they're so much more lifelike.

Didn't have that problem in Oblivion at all.  Not. At. All.
