Tonight the karma system has been implemented!  It's a little later than I projected, but it's finally here.

A brief rundown on what it is/how to use it:

The karma system is essentially a poll for each individual post.  You'll see two one link under a person's name, rank, and rank icons; one will say "[applaud]" and the other will say "[smite]".  Their purposes should be self-evident.  It will say "[applaud]", and clicking it will give delicious karma.  You can give one karma or take away one karma once per ten minutes.

Now, I know there was some concern about how this feature could be abused.  Unfortunately there are no notable preventative measures to ensure that it is not abused, but know that I will be monitoring this closely.  I will know foul play when I see it.

Additionally, this system is not an "I agree -- have karma" or "I disagree -- you lose karma" system.  Its use is meant for giving karma to posts that contribute in some way to the topic the post is in.  While I know some people will use it as if it is an agree/disagree system, know that I will work to balance that out as best I can.

On that note, know that this is essentially a trial period.  If we prove that we can't handle this in a mature way, then it will go away.

Now, a few things that need to be discussed:

- How long should the period between voting be? (Currently at 10 minutes)

- How many posts should be required of a user before they can vote? (Currently at 100 posts)

- Should karma be displayed as a total only or separately as a ratio of good karma to bad karma? (Currently displayed only as a total)

- What should the terms be for good/bad karma?  (Currently "applaud"/"smite", respectively)

Any other questions, concerns, or comments are appreciated, as always.

Good luck and have fun,

Turboweasle

I would say shprten the waiting period, since some topics get hot pretty fast and posts can stafrt flying in by multiple people. Maybe 2 minutes?

Good going, BTW.  I also think 100 posts is decent.

Yeah, shortening the length is probably going to happen.  I just put it that way to start considering the... uh... current state of affairs in the ASE.  ;D

Good and bad karma should be as a ratio.

Less than 10 minutes, I agree.

Yes, I think this is good. Let them work for privileges. Wink

I like the idea of a ratio.

I love the word smite...cracks me up. I can't really think of another word besides applaud... I guess it works.

I won't make any changes until tonight so that everyone has a fair chance of seeing this, but so far I'll be shortening the wait time and setting the karma display to a ratio.  Thanks for the suggestions.

I may have missed this, but... do people know who has applauded or smitten them?

I'm not going to go into detail.  I will say that I see more than the rest of you.
