The whole "X" player doesn't have a ring is a cop out. The playoffs have an insane amount of random variation that the most talented teams aren't guaranteed success. Does it mean those players were not great players? Hell no.

Basketball is a ridiculous sport to place the "he doesn't have a ring" tag on a player. There's 5 players from a team on the court at once, with 5 others likely to play. It's not Iverson's fault if the team around him isn't as good as the team around Kobe.

With this in mind...

LeBron James is an absolutely phenomenal player, and will go down as one of the best ever, assuming he remains healthy. What he has done relative to his pears is unbelievable. Look at the era he plays in, where players are massive, physical forces. The game has changed dramatically, and comparing what Magic was able to do vs. what LeBron is currently doing is virtually impossible. If someone has free time, feel free to find the relative impact of what LeBron James is doing.

this is the dumbest thing i've ever heard.

the object of the game is not to score 25 ppg, or make reverse layups, it is to win. simple as that.

success should absolutely be an integral factor in deciding the TOP 5 players of all time.

this isn't list off some good nba players, this is the "Best 5 NBA players to ever touch a basketball". in order to be a TOP 5 NBA player of it's history, you better believe championship rings is important. if they weren't good enough to make due of their surroundings, they probably aren't fit for the top 5. btw, if you were hinting at lebron, he has ridiculous support, no excuse for him to not have a ring after this year if he's to be considered a top 5 player.

i'd rather take a consistent winner (russell) than a consistent stat-freak (lbj).

Tom Heinsohn won 8 championships, ergo, he is a consistent winner and a better all time player then LeBron James. LeBron James had nothing in his years with Cleveland and still managed to take his team to the playoffs on a consistent basis. He made it to the championship in his first season with talent around him, and will most likely make it there again in his second. You clearly don't understand random variation.

Now lets also add to the fact that Bill Russell played in a time where there were 9 NBA teams, not 30. If you want to tell me Federer is better then Nadal because he has won more, fine, it's an individual sport. If you want to tell me Tom Heinsohn is better then LeBron because of championships won in a different era with while playing a team sport, you're absolutely incorrect. This goes for any sport.

I didn't say that it's the only basis, moron. I said it should be an "integral factor" for being in the Top 5.

LeBron shouldn't be Top 5 because there were (at least) 5 players that were as talented as him that actually won championships.

Grasping at straws.

The championship banners don't say "Bill Russell", they say "Boston Celtic" because it's a team sport. Ray Bourque went 20 seasons without winning, and finally won in his final season when he was past his prime and that championship is suddenly supposed to make him a better player? No. Barry Bonds never won a championship, but he's still arguably the greatest baseball player ever.

If an individual's impact on his peers wasn't great enough to produce a championship of the course of his career, he should not be considered a Top 5 great, as there were easily 5 others that had said impression.

That's more then comical. Find me a value stat that says X player was worth Y during Z playoff run.

Correlation =/= Causation

*than

If you think you can put a stat on a player's worth, why the **** am I wasting my time...

If you'd like to argue that Michael Jordan/Bill Russell/Larry Bird/Magic Johnson/Wilt Chamberlain were less valuable to their teams during the playoffs than LBJ, go right ahead.

You're trying to put a statistic on something that can't be defined with numbers. You're being lazy.

It's strange that people are so quick to reject stats when they disagree with their hypothesis, but love them when they agree with it.

You're so **** stupid.

I chose those 5 guys because of what I've seen from them on the court. You're too lazy to watch the game so you jump to fancy statistics because it's fast and easy.

It's ok. You're a product of your environment.

I've never heard of a number that was capable of being biased. I can't say the same about humans.

Numbers don't tell the whole story. That's my point. Read.
