Let me explain the downfalls of QBR in an easier way for you guys.
I'll use Colin Kaepernick's stats.
December 2nd, 2012: 21 for 32, 208 yards, 65.6 completion %, 6.5 Y/A, 0 TD's, 0 INT's, 9 rushes, 84 yards, 9.3 Y/R, 0 TD's.
A fairly average game for Quarterbacks in the league. The average yards per attempt is 7.01, completion percentage is 61%. QBR being on the 100 scale means that 50 is average. Kaepernick QBR's was 82.4, which translates to nearly two standard deviations above average.
December 9th, 2012: 18 for 23, 185 yards, 78.3 completion %, 8.04 Y/A, 0 TD's, 0 INT's, 6 rushes, 53 yards, 8.8 Y/R, 1 TD.
It's pretty evident what game between the two was better for Kaepernick, but he only received a 64.1 QBR, which is less than one standard deviation from the mean.
Why?
Kaepernick was rewarded on December 2nd for his play later on the game as it was a close game thus earning him a higher QBR. He was punished in the game on December 9th as his team had won quite handedly and he didn't earn any "clutch" points.
The issue is that if Kaepernick had been better early on in the game on December 2nd, he wouldn't have had to perform well later on. Basically, QB's that suck early and do well in close games are rewarded by QBR and QB's that lead do damage later on the game in blowouts receive no credit for what they have done.
QBR is a cool premise, but the stat isn't a great measure of performance in any way.
