Oil is just such a large part of everything money that it can't be changed without major financial consequences. The amount of people that are affected by it on a day to day basis is like no other product or service.

And it's going to suck major ballsacks when it runs out.  I'm not saying we have to stop pumping it immediately.  I'm just saying that we better get involved with R&D on a serious level if we want to have power/heat/transportation in the not-too-distant future.

I don't know, with the way the earth environment cycles work, it's bound to happen at some point. Unless you're confident in us being able to master deep space travel, I don't think it's relevant as to when we hit the next ice age.

We're already in an ice age, believe it or not.  This is one of the planet's colder climates.  Things are not going to cool down for quite some time, and I'm already sick of how hot it is in Mississippi.

We're going to lose major population centers on the coasts, but if we don't make major changes within the next, say, 70 years, we're going to be looking at massive land loss across the globe, affecting far more of the human population that it would otherwise.

It would be awesome to one day say: "Hey, I made my car run on CO2 and produce O2" but even making the switch to that would be virtually impossible. The worst case scenario will happen either way. It's just about making voters think we can actually do something.

We can actually do something, though.  That's the thing.

People thought we couldn't fly until 100 years ago.  Just because efficient, renewable energy seems like a distant dream now doesn't mean we can't do it.

They've been predicting peak oil for so long now. Every 50 years, it's supposed to run out, but we keep finding new ways to access it. R&D into oil is just as valuable as R&D into other sources. 30 years ago, oil sands meant nothing, but now look at it.

We're also going to royally fuck ourselves over if we keep re-producing at this rate too, but I have yet to hear anyone discuss this issue. The environment is just the fad of the month to appeal to people. There's thousands of ways that we are shortening our lifespan on this earth.

We also didn't invest basically everything in the world to a product before flying anyways, so it's impact isn't really all that comparable. I'd love for the world to be environmentally friendly but if you're telling me my Range Rover needs to go to do so, I'll disagree with you. Imagine how the people who have billions upon billions invested in this industry feel.

True, but renewable energy R&D doesn't carry with it the risk of speeding up the warming of our planet's warming cycle.

Good point, though I'm one of those crazies with a favorable opinion of eugenics and forced sterilization.  Fuck Hitler for giving eugenics a bad name.

There isn't really a good way to fix this problem in terms of not upsetting anyone.  Something's going to pay, and I'd rather it be wallets rather than lives.

Who's to decide who we upset though? It's easy for you and I to say that we need a renewable source, because we have (assuming here) virtually nothing invested in this compared to others. I'm sure if you had billions locked up in such an industry, you would be opposed to it. We are trying to speak on behalf of what's best for others when we will never be anything like them.

True, but I consider the lives of billions to be more important than the billions one person has.

One wrong mistake with an economy could literally destroy the lives of billions. Oil is one of the few that could do it.

I think that's less likely than billions drowning, which is why I'd make the call the way I've been advocating.  But I think this is a good example of a no-win situation.
