Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are both the best recommendations for anything on anything.

They're good but not that good.

Gradius V is the best pure action experience of all time IMO. Dodonpachi is a strong contender in that department also.

Shin Megami Tensei is the best role playing IMO.

Etc.

But there is a strong argument to be made that the Souls series is a contender for greatest of all time. Though I personally prefer a few other things first.

Also speaking of recommendations, I found this contrast pretty funny

Yeah, P4 is one of my favorites.

If you like it you might consider trying some of the other SMT games. You could go with Persona 3 which is a fair bit darker, but still has a similar theme and nature.

You could also try the mainline series, starting with it's magnum opus Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. Same battle system as Persona basically (with party members being summoned demons like the Personae instead of permanent human companions). You can also talk to enemies mid battle to try and negotiate with them to leave or join your or whatever. It's got the same great writing and role playing as Persona as well, though you should make sure your comfortable with the twisting of religious elements in the game such as the plot point of how
god is evil
But the series isn't too focused on religious themes IMO (word of the creator is that the gods and demons represent societal forces and philosophies), I mean there's elements of it, but you could take out all that stuff and the theme would be pretty much the same. So if your open minded enough to put jerk deities in their place, you'll enjoy this.

Oh yeah, and it's a lot less linear then Persona. Multiple endings/routes and an emphasis on choosing your own path.

If we're taking "like GTA" to mean "exactly like GTA but set in the Old West" then the obvious answer would be Red Dead Redemption (if you haven't played it already).

One of my favorites.... **** classic.

Bioshock 1 & 2 if you guys haven't played them already. A tremendous amount of effort went into developing the atmosphere of the game. The voice actors are all top notch. Also, check out the Golden Sun games on GBA (use an emulator if need be)

no

but I will:

Catherine, Spec Ops The Line, Sleeping Dogs (to a lesser extent), and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning are a few of the most under-the-radar big titles that are some of the best of the generation.

I agree with all of those.

Too bad that company that made Reckoning closed. I read some of their concepts for the sequel and it sounded really ambitious and cool.

Yeah. If you like that though, you should try Phantasy Star Online 2. Imo despite being an action rpg MMO, the combat is even better then Reckoning (or dare I say, most action games that aren't Bayonetta, even then it comes down to a matter of taste).

It's not grindy at all, I was able to go to the final dungeon in one hour playing with friends after deleting and remaking my character.

It has great atmosphere, when you're playing with friends it feels like a party game, when you're playing solo it captures that isolated dungeon crawl rpg feel.

It's really a fantastic game.

Spec Ops The Line

I found this game really pretentious and presumptuous.

MINOR SPOILERS

"Look how evil you are!  You're so evil!  You always had a choice but you always made the wrong one!  What?  You say we forced you to make those poor choices?  You say we rewarded you with no way to progress unless you made those terrible choices?  Nonsense!  Now let's give you some flashbacks to remind you how terrible you are after we pull one of the greatest cop-outs for an ending in this generation of games!"

Any game with multiple endings should allow me to actually make decisions in a game, not just tell me I could have done something differently when I know for a fact I tried to (the white phosphorus parts, in particular) and was not allowed to.

I REALLY hate that kind of stuff in games. My response is usually

"Ok, if you're going to cheat me like that, I'm going to just turn off the games power so you can't force me to be evil. If the gameplay is so great, I'll just compartmentalize it so hard that the story doesn't even exist to me. Nice job annoying the hell out of me 'writers'"

It's also one thing when a game gives you very clear reason to do the things you do. Like if you have a constant challenge to survive and you'll die if you don't keep on killing, but when the game literally just throws up an invisible wall unless you do the thing it wants you to do, that's just annoying.

Like if you have a constant challenge to survive and you'll die if you don't keep on killing, but when the game literally just throws up an invisible wall unless you do the thing it wants you to do, that's just annoying.

You pretty much described the level I was referencing.  You literally cannot progress in any way unless you do something horrific.  I tried for half an hour to find an alternative way to complete the level before giving up and consulting the web, only to find out I'm forced to do the horrible thing.

I think one of the best "morality" systems in any game is the one in Metro 2033/Metro 2034: Last Light.  Without giving too much away, how you behave in the game influences your in-game morality gauge.  It's very subtle, and requires you to be observant.  The game doesn't tell you "Hey, if you give this kid his toy back, you'll gain morality points!" or anything.  You have to take in your surroundings, explore every nook and cranny in mutant/ghost-infested tunnels, listen to conversations, and help when you can.  And all you get when you do something like that is a faint whispering sound and a barely visible blue flash to let you know you've done something right.

And it does change the outcome of the game.  There's no good or bad ending, really; the game doesn't judge you for how you played it.  But there is an ending and a better ending.  And when you get the better ending, you feel like you deserved it.  Same with the normal ending.  You have to act like a moral person in the game, you can't just choose the right dialogue option (of which there aren't any, actually).  It's brilliantly done, and makes you appreciate the game even more.

Blood Dragon is a really cool game. $15 for just a few hours of gameplay, but it's ridiculous and fun.

Regarding Metro, should I play the other(s) before Last Light? It looks amazing.
