I'll just be straight with you guys. I'm 25 with literally no job experience. Do you guys have any tips for someone trying to find some place to work?

I know about the usual "know someone in that line of work" tip since the only line of work that I've been in for a brief period of time was retail. My mom and brother helped me get into their places of work for the past few years on either temporary work (thanksgiving week) or a seasonal position (Holiday season).

I honestly want to work since it gives me something to do but I don't want to be one of those guys you see at McDonalds. So is there anyone with any experience that has any tips for me or others looking for work?

Well I think you're looking at it a bit wrong. Honestly, if you have 0 experience, there's nothing wrong with starting out at McDonalds. You could easily use that as a springboard to get yourself into a better position or save money to get yourself into community college or a trade school.

Basically, if you have no experience in anything, no matter where you go to apply you're going to start out at the most basic, lower levels, and that's completely okay because you can still work your way up to other better paid positions. You just have to be patient.

That being said, try applying at temp services too. They'll take you and either help you find a good temp-hire place where you can grow or if you want you can just take the temp jobs only. The benefit there is that they'll hand you a veriety of jobs and you can get your hand into several different things without having to tie yourself down. It's a good deal honestly. You just have to make sure and explain your position and make sure they know you don't have much experience in anything but are willing to work hard.

Chances are that you won't be having tons of fun with your first job, so try not to think about having standards  Tongue (Though I don't blame you for not wanting to work at Mcdonalds. Bleh)

Turd has a good point about temp agencies. I currently work at a decently nice hotel while going to school, and we occasionally have to use temps on weekends and whatnot. We actually have a temp we use right now that we're trying to convince to work at the hotel after she has fulfilled her requirements at the temp agency. Point being that you probably won't have an awesome first job, but you never know where things may lead.

Good luck  Afro

Part time, even though I probably won't be going back to school.

I'm not leaving Mickey D's out of the equation. I'd just like to see any better options before going for that one. I've applied to there a few times before. I'll think about the temp agency thing since my older brother (have 2 older brothers, I mean the oldest one) has used one before. My only problem would be transportation. My mom and brother have cars but they also work. I know there's the bus since I used it last holiday season. I'll keep the temp agency in consideration.

Work at McDonalds. It's actually a good thing to have on a resume.

I do occasional for hiring if we are looking for a certain thing. Resumes are really the only thing I have to go on for a first impression, so I'll give you what I've been told to look for.

When I see someone who is 25 and has no job experience, that resume is gone. That doesn't scream work ethic at all. When I see someone who started working on a farm at 14, it shows ambition. When I see companies like McDonalds, Lulu Lemon, Apple, FGL Sports etc. on a resume with references, that's huge. It's not 100% guaranteed that you get an interview based on this, but you're far more likely to get that far than if you're only work experience is at your family's office.

Big companies have massive turnover rates, especially in part time jobs, as they can get rid of you easily. It shows you're not totally incompetent and willing to work the crappy jobs if you need to. Everyone hates retail.

I'm not looking to hire straight off a resume, I'm looking for people who aren't incompetent that I can give an interview to.

The temp thing is a good idea.  I had a good friend that started that way.  One thing led to another and now he does payroll for the state making pretty good money.

You could be a fluffer Tongue

These are all good points DDD. I agree, it's best to have something on your resume because it makes the first impression.

Try retail, it can suck if you're not a social person, but you can meet a lot of great people and it can potentially turn into a career. I work at Sports Authority and the majority of the people there are part time and are 18-27 years old. After a year of working there i was promoted to "supervisor" (or authority as they are called at sports authority). My manager told me that i was on the hot bed to move up to a managerial position in a year if i was efficient with my sales and communication.

You could also try to take a 6/12 month certification in something, such as lifeguard, air conditioning repair, etc.

No work experience then yes picture yourself at McDonald's (or any fast food joint) for a bit.  That's where I started when I was 16.  Getting your foot in the door with customer service, cash handling and handling food.  Not to mention you figure out how serving the customer world is joke sometimes.  Then work your way up.   But who knows, maybe working in fast food will make you learn you want to be in an office not working with the people.  It guides you.  (sorry if this was already said.  Too late to read everything.)

When I was applying for U.S. Bank they thought that working at McDonald's for a couple years was awesome.  It was enough cash handling experience to work at a bank.

Or join the Military.

^This is great stuff.

Also, for you college kids...send letters (yes, real letters) to any large corporations that are related to your major in any way.  Describe your goals, major & minor, grades, activities, etc., and ask about summer internships.

When I finished my freshman year, I got hired by Calgon Carbon for the summers.  I came back every year.  They had me doing the same **** that their Level III Chemists were doing.  The OTJ experience opened many doors for me when I graduated.  Plus the money was **** awesome.

So I guess the general consensus is to work at McDonalds?

I'm also ignoring military as an option.
