I'm currently using FireFox. Trying to think of any good add-ons to put on it other than adblocker since I just got it 30 minutes ago.

So, since you seem to know about it, can you explain more to me?  I basically used it to block a site that would ask me for a serial number for a product.

Downloadhelper allows you to download Youtube videos, among other types of videos.  HTTPS Everywhere and Ghostery are particularly useful for security and privacy concerns, respectively.  HTTPS Everywhere, like the name implies, forces websites to use the HTTPS "protocol", which overlays an SSL/TLS encryption over data you send to a website.  Ghostery blocks cookies that track you from website to website and informs you of what you're blocking at any time.  Very useful tools.

So, since you seem to know about it, can you explain more to me?  I basically used it to block a site that would ask me for a serial number for a product.

A HOSTS file takes URLs and redirects them to the local host.  For example, if an ad from "ads.dealnews.com" is sent to any web page you are viewing, and the HOSTS file contains a record for "ads.dealnews.com", then the request is sent to the localhost (your computer) instead of ads.dealnews.com.  This, in effect, blocks the content because "ads.dealnews.com" instantly can't be found on the localhost.

Using this type of file can speed up general browsing, because you're not waiting for this content to be loaded from the various sources.  I'm no expert, so read more here:

http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

The only downside I've seen is that I can't watch some videos on some news sites.  Their ads are blocked, and the video won't play until the ad plays.  Catch 22 Smiley

HOSTS files are dynamic, so you should update every month or so.

Are there any security risks in using this methods?

I can't think of any security risks if you are just copying and pasting the list yourself. All it's doing is when your web browser is trying to go to an ad website, it directs your browser to go to your computer instead of the Internet, which of course goes nowhere.

So, if it goes to the PC it's not cached and won't clog up any memory?

No, it just basically dies. It tries to find the page and when your computer sends nothing back, that's it.

Awesome.  I'll try it.  My PC sucks as it is.

Anyone got any links to free malware, antivirus, pop up blocker?

You forgot this Tongue

A friend of mine in the IT business turned me on to this.  Seems to work well. It replaces your default HOSTS file with one that blocks "ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and even most hijackers."  Do this once, and it works for all browsers on your computer.

That's a cool idea. Never thought about doing that before. It'd take some effort to keep the list up to date though and I'm lazy and

how is firefox now? I read the other day they just updated it and it looks very similar to chrome now.

is chrome still considered the fastest? does it really matter?

chrome isn't supported at my company, just IE and recently firefox. I'm just too lazy to switch all my work stuff over to firefox so far. I use chrome for play and IE for work.

For launch times Chrome still seems faster, although I haven't tested it.  FF was updated a while back and looks a bit more similar to Chrome, but I dunno.

As for which one's faster, I'd say Chrome.  It launches each window as its own process instead of a thread in a process like FF, meaning each can claim its own system resources and doesn't have to wait for anything (relatively speaking, the OS still has the final say in that obviously).  This also means if a Chrome tab crashes the other tabs should be okay, assuming what crashed wasn't Flash.
