why would we need a karma system? the post system we have encourages posts to get a few extras. the karma system at gamefaqs just encourages me to log in and view a few pages then im off.

I think Seth means the Karma system GamerHold has. People can give/take karma to/from you.

I don't really know. It shows people if people approve or disapprove of you, I guess.

lol mum.
and yeah I think he means a karma system where others can rate your posts by giving a +1 or a -1. It is just for fun and really means nothing else. This particular forum does have the capabilities to do a karma system, it's just a matter of if we want to do it.
Personally, F5 has this same system and no one really ever uses or pays attention to it. Seems like a waste to me, but it also doesn't hurt. So give feedback here so the staff can make a decision. The more intelligent and detailed your post, the more it will help us make a decision.

I think it's a great idea.
It would cut down on the rather crude attitudes that some members convey in their posts. And if not, we'll just see how far down we can get that number to go.
It may even stop the act of spamming to get a higher post count. If someone spams, they lose respect- simple as that.
It really plays off of the physcology of the individual in question. People, generally, want the approval of their peers. If it is obvious that their peers aprove of a certain action, the individual is more likely to behave in that way. If the individual sees a negative reaction amongst his or her fellow members, perhaps he or she will be more likely to avoid that action, for fear of public disapproval.
It may work as a way to show newer members who are the respected members of the community, and thus, seeking the approval of the new site, try to act as the respected members act.
The only problem I see with it is the revenge factor and the "watermelon" factor. If persons A and B get into an argument, A marks B's karma down out of sheer spite. That's not entirely fair, but the system would revolve around opinion, so I'm really in limbo about that. The "watermelon" factor is the same as MoH. Two or more people boost each others' karma just to show off their impressive score, thus losing the respect and prestige that would normally be associated with a high score.
If there is a way to prevent "watermeloning", then I'm all for this idea.

Thank you for the great post Turbo.
To help the discussion, there are several options we have in customizing the karma settings.
First, you can make the karma in one of two ways. One is where it only counts up from zero. So you can give a positive rating but no negative ratings. The other offers the option of not only adding to someone's karma, but taking away from it.
The next thing to consider is how many posts are required before a user can modify the karma of someone else. This number should be high enough so new accounts aren't created to spam karma, but low enough that most people can utilize the system.
Next, you can set a waiting limit between your ability to modify someone's karma. Say I rate someone a -1 and am pissed at them. I can have a limit of changing their karma only once per hour so I can't just spam their karma down. This can be any limit of time. An hour seems fine to me to allow for cooling off and getting board with the thought of spamming, but we could even do 24 hours if we want.
And finally we can customize the labels. We don't have to call it karma. We can call it whatever we want. And the default names for giving +1/-1 are "applauding" and "smiting" respectively. We can change those too.
So let's hear your thoughts.
