Happy Thursday.
I'm about done with everything on FFIX (haven't decided if I'm going to take the time to upgrade all my cards to get a perfect collector level). My daughter also beat the game and now decided she wants to do a low level run, which is way beyond what I think she can handle. It's cute. She is trying so hard but keeps getting KO'd over and over again in the Ice Cavern (1st Black Waltz fight). Eventually she'll win that one, but I think it's going to be a long ride through the rest of the game.

Turd, you're watching this when it starts airing in October. Second half of it will have based Papa Bones and every one's favorite lucha queen, Quetzalcoatl. Also blonde Rin demi-servant because they of course have to pander to Rinfags with TWO Rin dem-servants

He lives! We went out of town for a couple days. But I did pick up Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild over the weekend. I just started playing it. It's a pretty fun game so far. Much less linear than other Zelda's which is nice in a way. I can't say I'm a huge fan of the lifespan of the weapons. I find myself not using the best equipment to explore so I don't wear it down for when I need it against bosses. But then I don't get to use the best stuff against most enemies since there seem to be more enemies in the field than anywhere else. Then again, I'm pretty early in the game, so that might change.

Ok, I'm several hours in and have to say that BotW is a masterpiece. They got everything right. The open world is vast and breathtaking. Given the non-linear story and full access to all areas up front, it can be as challenging as you want to make it. It takes everything that was great about the Zelda franchise and removed some of the things people don't like. I was originally worried the weapon durability mechanic would be a problem, but it really isn't. I can see now that it was necessary since the player has access to the whole map and can therefore find very powerful weapons early on in the game. So without durability stats, the game would be a joke. It was a good way to balance the challenge without changing any of the other great qualities this game has. If they tried to get rid of weapons breaking by scaling difficulty in some other way like some games do, it would really ruin the 100% open world and story. Unlike previous Zelda games where there was typically 1 way to complete a task, this game emphasizes creativity and there are innumerable ways to complete a task. The reward for exploring is great. And because the blood moon mechanic resets much of the world's resources, there is a never ending incentive to continue to explore, learn the world, mark your map for things you want to return and get again after the blood moon respawns them. Or you can plod along with the story in a linear fashion if you want (even though it's not linear there are at least some hints in the quests that can show you a semblance of order if you choose to follow it) and even that can be a rewarding way to play. It really is up to the gamer how to experience the game. If someone has something they don't like about the game, even game mechanics, there is nearly always a way to avoid that feature and do it in a way that is satisfying to you. All in all, I can't really think of a better game to spend a few hundred hours in. And with as little time as I spend playing games these days, this just might be one I enjoy for years to come.

And here I am waiting for the 6th book to drop. I haven't seen the show, but love the books. Since Martin hasn't written the books yet, maybe this season sucks because HBO is having to do it on their own.

Oh this is about the third season the show has run without material from the books, and it's quite noticeable, particularly the past two seasons. I long ago made peace with the fact that the show wasn't going to have as much depth as the books when it came to political intrigue, but the most recent episode featured what has to be the worst depiction of defensive siege tactics I've ever witnessed. This wouldn't be unforgivable on its own, but it's both the cherry on top of the sh*t pie the show has become and also the straw that finally broke the camel's back when it comes to my own viewing pleasure.
At this point I'm just hoping GRRM releases Winds of Winter before he kicks it. I'm not expecting A Dream of Spring to be completed, at least not by him.
