lol I am a dictator because my opinion is different than yours?  Wow.

I disagree with every single argument you made in that last post.  You call me lazy for not wanting to put ANY more limitations on posting, yet you won't scroll down and ignore people you don't want to read?  Irony much?

And I have not been condescending to you one time in this thread.  You have a really bad habit of personalizing disagreements.  You do it in every argument you are in on this site.  I was never once condescending, but rather stated my opinion, including the dangers I see inherent in moderating such harmless posts.  That is not condescending.  Get some tougher skin if you think it is.

As I said before, I do and always will stand against stricter moderation on this site.  I intend to completely uphold the philosophy behind the creation of this site.  This site was an experiment in freedom.  The whole point was to see if we can have a successful community without fear of moderation regardless of the content of the posting.  Obviously, for legal reasons we have to comply with obscenity laws and the like, and keep the site at least free for all to view even if they are at work, but other than that, we are not going to limit the free speech that this site was founded upon.

And I have studied the effects of the slippery slope theory in great detail, and whether you are long-sighted enough to see it or not, a move in one direction will ALWAYS lead to further movement in that direction.  I, for one, do not want this site to take that first step toward more moderation, no matter how small or insignificant that step may seem to be right now.

You can disagree with me if you want.  Heck, the majority can disagree with me.  But let me remind you, that just because the majority thinks it is right doesn't make it so.  For example, there was a time when the majority of americans thought slavery was ok.  Did that make them right?  Of course not.  The same reason that our country is not a direct democracy is the same reason this site isn't either.  The freedoms of the minority must be insulated from the tryanny of the majority.

There you go again.  Explain to me how thinking your opinion is more right than the majority's and subsequently ignoring them isn't dictatorial?  You're not even entertaining the concerns of the people that make your "expirement" work.

As for the condescending bit, maybe you're right.  But in all my dealings with you and in all my observations of your arguments, you always act like you and you alone are right, and you're always making little remarks to let everyone know it.  Differing opinions, I guess.

The slippery slope theory hasn't been proven wrong because no one is daring enough to let go of the two extremes to see if it works.  One side wants complete control, and one side wants none.  Which is worse?  Absolutely no freedom or absolute freedom?  I say they are equally dangerous.  Freedom of speech is great, but slanderous, hateful, and disgusting remarks are not, by any stretch of the imagination, great.

As I said before, I have been ignoring the spam since this site's creation.  I put up with Chaos, after all (remember him?).  The point is, there is just too much spam now.  Nearly every thread in the MoH board is comprised of nothing but petty, insulting remarks made by I8, mainly, though he is not solely at fault.  All I'm asking is that some action be taken so that everyone else's experience here is enjoyable.

If you and all the other admins and mods are opposed to stricter rules, then I am in the wrong to be bringing this up.  After all, I did not create the site and I did not make the rules.  All I wanted to do here was to show you that the majority was becoming uneasy, and suggest that something be done about it.  If you don't want to, then I cannot force you to.  Who knows?  Maybe I've over-stayed my welcome.

Do whatever you want, but know that the majority has spoken.

Yeah, funny how that worked out.  Roll Eyes

And the first post from him that I saw was:  "1 vs 1 Fool".

I say "majority" not in terms of the site (we have more than 9 members, I hope), but in terms of those who care enough to vote.  Again, if someone doesn't vote, we must assume they are apathetic about the outcome.

Turbo.  I don't know what gave you the impression that I am somehow in charge here and therefore my disagreement with you is somehow ignoring what people want and dictatorial.  That is not the case. My opinion is my opinion.  I am not speaking for any other staff members, just myself.  So my disagreement with the majority (which remains to be seen if this is in fact a majority) is not dictatorial, it is dissent.  Obviously I feel my opinion is right.  If I didn't, it wouldn't be my opinion now would it?  And while in most contexts, both extremes are problematic, in this case, where we are an internet forum where people are free to express themselves, extreme freedom (not that we are extreme on that side since we do limit **** and other obscenity) is not a bad thing.  If you don't like a site with that much freedom for its posters, fine, you have that prerogative.  But that's what this is, so I don't know what to tell you.  We aren't changing the entire basis for the site because a couple spammers are upsetting a few people.  Sorry.

And I don't want you to feel like you were wrong for bringing it up if others don't agree.  I encourage topics like this and people bringing up their concerns and opinions.  Even if you are the only one on the site who holds a particular opinion, it doesn't mean you were wrong to bring it up.  Don't feel that way.  You have every right to your opinion and to express it on this site.  We both do, and so does anyone else.  And that is why I will fight so hard to allow you to post whatever you want to.

Members abstaining are always taken as "no" votes since you can't assume their opinion.  If they are too apathetic to vote, then they are satisfied enough with the status quo to not speak out for change.

I voted no.  I understand your points, and the mods can feel free to clean up the spam when they see it.  However what someone may consider spam, others consider it a way of communicating their feelings.  Smileys are a great example of this.  I will sometimes just post a smiley that properly displays my reaction to the previous post.  So while I don't have a problem cleaning up OBVIOUS spam, it is such a fine line that I want to err on the side of undermoderating rather than overmoderating.  I for one am willing to wade through the spam and conversations that I am not interested in in order to avoid possible over-moderation.  I do this because I know there may be a time when I want to engage in such a thread and I know I wouldn't want to feel like I am limited in how I can express myself.

This is a community, and not simply a place to get information (as gamefaqs tried to make it).  As such, you have to learn to put up with other members of the community engaging in coversations and expressing themselves in ways that you are not interested in.  I find this is a VERY small price to pay for the freedom that Wii Unite offers.

For these reasons, I am extremely hesitant to ever recommend that we put in place any strict policy or even embark down the slippery slope of what smiley is spam in what situation, and what isn't.  All along, at Wii Unite, our mod policy has been that unless it is "blatant disruptive spam that completely quashes the functioning of the board" or unless it is "grossly obscene" we will let it be.  Short of those things, we are a free community and as such, some sacrifices of tollerance must be made.

wow...
I am torn between the two, but am slightly leaning toward turbo, in the sense of modding.  but that doesnt mean that the mods have to go sift through the spam and delete accordingly due to the fact that to some the "spam" may be relevent.  but a simple PM to those in question, or reported may suffice.  I can testify of that due to the history of me and ress.  3 mods stepped in and made a simple request and the dust has settled.  keep in mind also that most of the ones in question are adolescents and can be tamed alot more easily than an adult, and in fear of losing their account or facing reprocussions(?) they would proably seize to spam.

here ya go lakkus:

ok my first post ealier was just after reading the first and last post cuz the rest of the wall o' text posts just look like spammy crap to me. but i read them all now... not really but i skimmed thru some of them. and im still in agreement with Lawyer.
I dont see why all the sudden interest in modding the community now. if you were with us from the beginning of MoH you yourself would know our community was born from spamming Gfaqs. thats how we got to know each other. Thats how we communicated and thats how we made a stale game last us as long as we did.
In case you forgot the reason we broke off of Gfaqs was because some asshat mods decided that we were spamming the boards when we were having our best of threads. Now to those mods i guess it looked like spam or maybe a few members reporting our threads as spam. maybe by thier def it was but by ours it wasnt. unless its someone is posting wayyyy off topic threads like asking about sega in the cod forum or As long as thier isnt all out p0rn pics or vids im not touching it... unless i want to mess with you then im going to rearrange a few words or add a few.

and getting 10 people to vote in your thread hardly means your getting the opinion of the majority

I can't believe I'm going to respond to you even after you confessed to not reading all the posts.  I'll use bullet form, since you're special:

-  I was around during the old MoH days at GF.  Just because you didn't know who I was doesn't mean I wasn't there.

-  I never said I had the majority of the site.  I said that the majority of people who voted voted yes.  Please don't post if you can't take the time to read it.

-  I'm not against conversational spam.  I'm against spam like I8's.  Since you didn't read this topic, I doubt you even know how much I8 posts and what is generally the only thing he has to say.

You don't know what you're talking about.  Please read all of an argument before attempting to engage in it.
