I have it but rarely use it.  Some pretty crazy deals go on there though.  Four copies of Borderlands were selling for $15... that's crazy.

A LOT of people I know use it. So I use it for general communication, as well as gaming.

I mostly use it for communication.  One of my best friends from school refuses to get Facebook so I message him through Steam.

It's software that you can get on your computer which allows you to communicate to other gamers and buy games (PC) at great prices.  You can add friends, edit your profile (as much as a forum would let you) and look at some stats.  It tells you which of your friends are online and which game they're playing.  It's run by Valve I think.

ok, so I found the WU steam group and I think I joined it.

I can't add anyone though cuz I don't have any games downloaded yet. So, add me if you will please.

I'm going to try out a few games and see if this laptop can play anything worth a crap. It's not a gaming rig so I'm sure I can't play any new awesome games.

Is Age of Empires on here? I have AoE2 CE already. Can I play game I already own against people on steam?

Title: Re: Official Steam ID Topic
Post by: Squire Grooktook on September 18, 2012, 01:57:14 am
You can put anything you want on steam. But it might be difficult to get the invite system working across steam if the game is not on steam.

Try TF2. It's free and almost any computer can run it. You could test out stuff by trying to see if you can tune up graphics on tf2.

Also I'm PRETTY sure age of empires is on steam.

Title: Re: Official Steam ID Topic
Post by: Cadillak on September 18, 2012, 08:08:54 am
TF2 was the first thing I looked for and started downloading, lol.  O0

Portal worked fine last night at the higher settings... but it had a bit of a slow framerate but not bad.

I found Age of Empires Online, but that one kinda sucked compared to the real game. I need to try it out more with Turbo or something.

I think I've decided to buy a pimped out gaming PC as my next big purchase. Steam is awesome.

If you're at all comfortable assembling a computer, do yourself a favor and buy the parts (RAM, hard drive, processor, etc.) separately.  You'll save a lot of money.

EDIT: And I'm down for some AoE.  If AoE Online is free to play I might look into it, but I have AoE II, AoE II: Conqueror's Expansion, and AoE III as well.

I've poked around and know it's possible, but it's not particularly easy.  We'll have to use a service like Voobly (http://www.voobly.com/games/view/13) to do it.

I figured it would be more than just joining each other through stream. I remember last time I looked into it I found that it www a bit of a pain to set up. I was hoping I could just sign into stream, send you an invite, and play. Obviously, I don't know **** about PC gaming since the last time I played a PC game against someone was in 7th grade computer class playing doom when the teacher was gone.

7th grade computer class playing doom when the teacher was gone.

FUN STUFF.

But yeah, inviting through Steam itself only works if the game was released on the platform. You can add the game to Steam so that you can take Steam screenshots, have steam notify friends what you're playing, and chat with friends using steam overlay. But you can't actually invite through steam.

Still, Steam makes setting that **** up easier. Cause you can just pm friend what sever your playing on or whatever through steam chat.

Number of times I said "Steam" in this post (not counting in this sentence): 8

i was surprised when you hit me up on the chat last night. it just popped up out of nowhere. I didn't know it was already running in the background, lol.

so, what game can we all play together that everyone likes? can't be a game that needs a powerhouse PC.

lol, I remember when our computer club in HS got the java quake game running on linux, and we would just play that all the time.  Our teacher didn't even care during programming, so long as we had our work done.

Then we managed to get a demo of Halo running, and it was awesome.  I think the principle caught 2 guys once, and tried to make us stop.  Then one of my friends hacked the school clocks and set the clocks a few hours ahead of schedule, and would shut the lights off in the auditorium during a class meeting or something.  Hilarious stuff.

Tf2 is always easy to set up.

Left 4 Dead and it's sequel both run on a lot of pc's, and are great fun.

it wasn't running great, but it worked. I had the settings kinda high and didn't have time to turn it down and see if it would run better. the fps was too low to play with the settings up? Question: will it help if I played in a smaller window? My laptop screen is pretty big so I could play in a smaller window. Also, wtf do all those settings mean and which ones do I want on/off? I know most of the basic stuff.

What game should I buy? I was thinking of getting Braid or something like that. I like a da old school type games.

If I recall, windowed generally helps run faster. I don't recall what all the settings are in TF2, but generally you want textures set to low if you want a smoother game. Experiment.

Also if you like old school games, I highly recommend The Binding of Isaac (http://wiiunite.smfforfree3.com/index.php/topic,20935.0.html). Seriously.

What about actual old school remade games that have online now. Any good ones we could play? Something like we used to play in arcades together.

Title: Re: Official Steam ID Topic

Well, I dunno about remakes on Steam. there's Gundeadligne, which is a side scrolling bullet hell shmup with online co op on Steam. Terraria you might also like.

Actually, you could always go straight for the kill and just play the original games via emulator with netplay.

It says you have 3!

Also Team Fortress 2 is free to play.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/440/?snr=1_7_15__13

You should download it and give it a try just to see if your computer can handle it. It's a pretty low end game, most pc's should be able to. You'd also probably like it as a game too.

Also I usually use Steam for all my communications, but just not so much until Summer when I can play games. Be sure to get on Steam a lot! Or you suck.

Definitly going to start playing Dota 2 more, now that its officially out.  Any of your friends sell their custom content for this game?

TF2 is almost done downloading for me.

And now that Dont starve is on sale, I'm buying that.  And I'm going to buy a few other cheap ones, might pick up that breath of death and ctulu pack, or get phantasy star IV.
