Title: Bitter Butter Battle
Post by: June on March 25, 2011, 08:06:59 am
What say ye?

Some people keep their butter out on a dish so that it is warm and spreadable. Some keep it in the fridge because they fear keeping a dairy product out.

My family keeps it out because (frankly) it SUCKS to spread it. They use real butter, not margarine, either. I keep mine in the fridge and just warm up some when I need to spread it.

Also, the subject heading was inspired by:

Great book. Philisophical, really.

as with any product, it isn't hard to tell when it has "spoiled", so fear of leaving it out is a bad reason.  Most dairy products are meant to be left out and take a really long time to spoil.  The fear probably comes from how quickly drinking milk that has been pasteurized and homogenized will spoil.  However butter, cheeses and many other dairy products are really designed to not spoil.

that being said, we usually buy a big tub of margerine and it goes in the fridge (so it's not a dairy product anyway).

How do you have bread and butter then? Even the "spreadables" don't actually spread when they are kept in the fridge.

Fridge.

Leaving it out makes it all jelly-like and then whatever dust particles are flying around get on it. (Unless you put a lid on it and nowIfeeldumbforsayingthatbecausewhodoesn'tputalidonit? :-[ )

we keep the real butter in a butter thingy that has a lid on counter and the "spread" (I can't believe it's not butter) in the fridge.

I use the real butter to cook with mostly and the spread for crap like toast that doesn't matter much.

like Ohio said, butter/cheese products are meant to be kept out and not spoil. that's kinda why they exist in the first place.

I don't have problems spreading them on bread.  ???

There are some "spreadables" that actually do blow at spreading on bread, but thats typically the "healthier" of the options. Real men go for the most processed margarine they can find  :D :D :D

My refrigerator is also a tad colder than most. I like things COLD... perhaps that is why mine don't spread. I also buy the most natural and/or healthy that I can.... so it may be different.

I NEVER squeeze my butter, so that stuff wouldn't work for me.

The reason for this topic is that I am sick and I was eating some waffles for breakfast (buttermilk, a comfort food of mine) and I went to put some butter on. It was straight from the fridge and tore up the first waffle. I melted it after that.

Are you trying to hold your knife with your feet?  Maybe use your hands with a gentle touch next time. :P

Haha... maybe I was aggressive. I just wanted to eat and lay back down, hahahaha. However, I am kind of particular when it comes to my waffles. I like a little butter in each one of the little squares. :P

We leave it out in a butter dish with a lid.

My mom uses one of these: http://itotd.com/articles/215/french-butter-dishes/ | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_butter_dish

It's pretty neat, but I'm too lazy to buy one.  It's too much work, too, changing the water.

That reminds me when Heinz released the purple, green, and blue ketchups.  Yuk.
