Seems like this isn't a direct result of a crappy global economy, but it still worries me a bit.  According to the article, that's 6% of their employees.

Sound drastic to you guys?  If it really is just part of a "broader restructuring plan," why the relatively significant cutbacks?

Maybe they are getting rid of some dead weight? Six percent does seem like a lot... but maybe it is one of those necessary evils to pave the way for some new thinkers?

Let's hope so.  I mean, I really doubt Sony is in danger of financial collapse or anything, but those cutbacks could easily hurt their gaming department.  That would bum me out.

I think this is indeed part of a larger re-structuring plan and my guess is they should have started something earlier to minimize the impact.  I would not be surprised if the effects of the Tsunami also played a part.  You are right to have some concern though, I think major changes are coming to the gaming industry in the next few years and less nimble companies might struggle to keep pace.  Kudos for reading the WSJ they tend to balance out the liberal bias that seems ever prevalent these days.
