Title: Which console will you be getting?
Post by: Laughing Turd on April 19, 2012, 08:50:43 pm
I'll be going for a PS4, a pc down the line and even further down a WiiU.

I've given everyone 5 different votes and the ability to change vote. As information comes out down the line and you find yourself wanting/not wanting something, you can change it.

Also, please post any rumored specs  that you come across online and discuss anything that would be revolutionary or that you just want to see in a console. What is absolutely necessary for the next generation of consoles to include?

Please sticky so we can monitor changes in opinion as time goes on.

Edit:

Please don't vote for the platforms you WANT. Choose only the ones you honestly plan on buying.

Only voted for Xbox "720" because I like how Microsoft treats hackers/modders and most of my friends IRL have a 360 at the moment.  Also, I wouldn't consider an Apple product or PC a console...

I'm hopefully getting a PC before too very long.  Besides that, the PS4.  I'm still uncertain on the WiiU.

Is it just my laptop or is the lower-case letter "g" being cut off at the bottom?

All the g's look fine on my screen.

I'll obviously be getting the WiiU, but maybe also a new laptop later down the line which I guess can be used for gaming.

Hm, I wouldn't say they are consoles either but they should be mentioned here as well as more than just an alternative. PC has the capacity to run most anything you can throw it's way so in many ways it's better than console. Plus, with this next generation of consoles I think the line dividing the two will blur even more since they are supposedly using off the shelf tech to power consoles rather than use proprietary stuff. Apple is supposedly working on some kind of game device of sorts although maybe not a dedicated console.

Actually, I thought about it and figured it would be better to get a pc or laptop before the PS4 since it's obviously a good distance down the pipeline. I don't know if I should get a pc or laptop though.

The WiiU...well I need my Nintendo fix man. The thing is that I read that when it comes out, it's going to be like the Wii all over again. It might be stronger than the current generation but that's not really saying much. I feel that when it releases it's already going to be 1 year outdated. I'm really unsure about it but I'd like to think that it will be okay somehow.

As for the desktop vs laptop question, I guess the most important thing to ask yourself is if you're going to be traveling a lot of places where you'll need/want a computer.  If that will be frequent, I'd suggest a laptop with some nice accessories so it can also double as a makeshift desktop.

Title: Re: Which console will you be getting?

That sounds like a good idea. I actually do prefer mobility and compact size since I looked around and don't really have a good spot for a pc and desk. I really hate giving up the ability to upgrade though. How much more powerful would a desktop be vs a laptop?

The WiiU is going to be another piece of **** like the Wii. A gimmick, with a whole bunch of Mario/Zelda games like every other Nintendo system.

Nintendo went down the shitter after the N64. That is one of the greatest systems of all time.

I might be buying a PS4/New XBOX. Why would I plan on buying either, though? We know nothing about these systems yet.

Rofl.

That's what I'm doing. Also, DON'T GO CHEAP ON A MOUSE. Anything under $30 will be garbage. Anything wireless under $40 will most likely be garbage. You'll want to get a wireless if you're using it for a laptop. They do have a tiny bit more lag (I've never even noticed, but it's there) but it's worth not having the cord snag on everything around you.

How much more powerful would a desktop be vs a laptop?
The thing is, there's a point where upgrading doesn't really make much of a difference unless you have to play on the highest quality in every game, can't settle for a single bit of noticeable lag, etc. I'm not saying buying better parts is pointless, but unless you're playing nonstop or rendering huge videos each day, you're not really getting your money's worth.

What difference does the mouse make?

Let's put it this way. If I want to play BF3 on pretty good settings (even max settings on occasion), will a laptop be able to satisfy my needs? Is there anything with enough grunt that won't cost an arm and a leg and still be able to do other things besides just play games?

Basically I'm looking for the Chevy Corvette of laptops. Can hang with the supercars or cruise down the widing road.

That's what I'm looking for, which is why I'm getting an HP for $850. i7 processor, 8g RAM, 6770 gpu. The processor might be overkill, but I don't want something that will be useless in a few years. From what I understand, it will run BF3 on the highest settings, but optimal performance would be a step lower. But I don't actually have one yet so I can't say for sure.

And don't think I'm a computer genius or anything, this is just from what I've seen.

http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-m11x-r3/pd

That's the Alienware I'm looking at.

With almost-maxed-out specs, it's a bit over $1000, but I've read hundreds of reviews and they all seem positive.  It won't run Skyrim or BF3 on super-duper-awesome max settings, but it will run it lag-free on normal settings.  Since I'm not a big graphics person, that won't bother me at all.

As for the mouse, I randomly happened upon a really good wireless one a few years back and I've been using it ever since.  It's a Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3000.  A quick Google search shows it selling from $20 - $30 online, and I can guarantee it's worth it.  It doesn't have any fancy side buttons like some higher-end ones do, but it's served its purpose well.

Go to the customization menu.  You get this:

Intel Core i7 2637M 1.7GHz(2.8GHz w/Turbo Boost, 4MB Cache)

They display the bare-bones build to entice you with a lower price.

I'm not sure if I want the Wii U or not. I'm excited for Pikmin 3 and another Mario Kart but I just don't know if it's worth it...and I'm also getting away from gaming a little bit, besides sports games.

Slowly moving away from games.  :-\  I don't have the money or time anymore.

If I had money and time I'd get a PS4.  Since we're pretending I'd just get them all.   >:D  but seriously PS4 sounds awesome.

If a system has motion controls like the wii I might get it, otherwise I doubt i'd get another system again.

Title: Re: Which console will you be getting?
Post by: Laughing Turd on April 20, 2012, 07:24:28 pm
Well the Wii is supposed to be keeping it's Wii Remote setup and I do believe the PS4 will carry on with the MOVE.

The problem with the MOVE is that there aren't too many major titles that support it. I know you play a lot of CoD and so far MOVE support hasn't been added. I might add that the developers for Killzone added MOVE support but actually had to put in performance limits since MOVE players were outperforming the Dualshock guys. Maybe that's one reason why Infinity WArd won't support it.

Title: Re: Which console will you be getting?
Post by: MEX on April 20, 2012, 07:36:20 pm
Yeah what Laughing Turd said Jayson. The Wii U will still support the Wiimote and maybe the PS4 will still support the Move although not many developers are supporting it on the PS3.

Also damn I did not know what you just said right now Turd about all that Killzone and Move stuff. I guess we now know who can win between a motion controller and a regular controller for an fps game huh? I mean the Wii allows both motion controls and classic controller support for fps games too, but now we have another example only this time it's on the PS3 with very little lag online.

i don't want to do the whole move or kinect **** when I play video games, I want to sit on my ass with a comfortable controller (ps2 / xbox 360) and veg for a couple hours. it's not a **** $300 fitness program.

with that being said, I don't know if I'm too crazy about the WIiU's controller yet. obviously i'll have to learn more about it and see it in action before i make a decision but, as of now, idk if i'd get a wiiu. leaning towards the xbox720 if anything.

although, i will say, we should all try to coordinate to an extent and get the same console that supports a good fps or rts game that we can play.

I'll give you credit for your post. I like to veg and play, too. I DO like the kinect for social gatherings, though. That's why I like it so much. It's really funny to watch people play.

First of all because I hate having to uninstall all of their crap (I'm looking at you, HP Support Center).

We have an HP desktop at my parents' house, so I've had plenty of time to familiarize myself with it.  Granted, it's not a gaming build, but it's still a shoddy machine.

Well sure they have a lot of useless crap, but so does pretty much anything. I just don't see how you can say you're paying for trust unless you've had experience with Alienware before. The way I see it, you're paying for a brand.

How many games do you have and what size is your HDD? I bought the 160 gig model so I delete things I don't want constantly.

ANyway, one thing I really, really hope they can implement next gen is some way of separating everyone based on skill level. It's probably something each game has to do individually but hopefully it's still something that gets more consideration in the future. I hate always being set with teams full of idiots.

It would also be great if there was a way to identify little kids playing M rated games and keep them separate altogether. I was just playing BC2 when suddenly a 10 year old's voice came through the mic. 1 minute later another 10 year old voice responded and then you can imagine how the rest of the match went.

But in the same way, you'll never be going against "idiots" either so you're more likely to do worse.  Maybe you're happy with a challenge, I don't know, just saying.

Everyone lies about their age and some people hit puberty late (or are girls...).  There isn't really a way to solve this.

i have an absolute ton. literally about 60 titles. about 2/3 of them are on the hdd.

also, as nice as your online idea sounds there's literally no way to implement something like that. though games where you pick the match you join often do it better. those 12yo noobs you mentioned have big egos so they prefer playing in newbie games. where as we like to find the competition.

I don't mind at all not doing as well as usual but I do love having a good and fair challenge. The thing about BC2 these days is that you're either on the stacked team or you're on the team with their thumbs stuck up their butts. Usually I get stuck on that second team and it's utterly impossible to accomplish anything alone.

THe ten year olds playing is one thing and yest you can mute them but the bigger issue was that they went on to PLAY like 10 year olds. Again, being on that team is a huge headache and with the smaller player base BC2 has now you can't just leave and find another awesome match.

If you can't separate the kids from the adults then maybe you can have some kind of "good players" section where you have to be at a certain skill level to even join. Maybe there can be a way to establish a persons true skill so that it won't just be the persons with more play time that get in and from then on you'll be joining lobbies with more adept players more often.

Oh and one last thing, can we please not be put into matches that are about to end? That's really annoying.

Even still, as sad as it is, some kids actually get pretty good and it wouldn't elliminate all of them.

I think this is a great idea that could easily be implemented into any shooter.  If the game has less than 1/3 or 1/4 remaining, it's impossible to rejoin.  Usually the team with little players left because they were being dominated so it's not like you can usually come back for a win.
