Title: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on June 29, 2012, 03:07:23 pm What is Phantasy Star Online 2?
Phantasy Star Online 2 is a massively multiplayer online action rpg. It is the long awaited successor to Phantasy Star Online, the first console mmo and one of the most influential, and best online games of all time. Combat Pso2 is an action rpg, with real time, skill based combat. All enemy attacks can be evaded or blocked, and any enemy or boss can be defeated by any player of any level, provided the player has the skill to consistently dodge or block enemy attacks. All classes and races can move fast and jump, with unique mobility and evasive options for each class (Hunters can block and dash both on the ground and in mid air, Rangers can move and shoot at the same time as well as combat roll, spellcasters teleport, ect). There is a great deal of potential for unique combos and play styles as well. The game is also not dominated by "the holy trinity" or any other such set up. Any character or party can win, regardless of class or set up, some will just have an easier time of it. Gameplay Pso2 does not have an overworld like other mmo's. Instead, players enter fields, dungeons, and other events through the main lobby. Unlike it's predecessor, the stages of Pso2 (with a few exceptions) are randomly generated, and thus are never the same twice. In addition, there are a great variety of random events that can occur during a stage. Multiple events can trigger at once, and these can range from having to rescue captured players, avoid unstoppable juggernaut like creatures, diffuse bombs, fight bosses (sometimes more then one at a time) and more. Beyond the usual quests, there are also time attack missions, story quests, npc requests, ect. Character creation, customization, and building PSO2's character creator offers quite a bit of freedom and allows you to mold every aspect of your character. There are 8-9 grids for the face alone, and numerous more for the rest of the body. Your characters clothes do not effect stats in any way, and are purely aesthetic. Armor barely appears on your character, usually depicted as small units attached to the arms or legs, and even these can be made to not show. There are 3 races in Pso2 at the moment (though additional ones have been strongly hinted at). They are as follows: Humans, who focus on balanced stats Newmans (SPACE ELVES), who focus on techniques and magic Casts (BEEP BOOP I AM A ROBOT), who have strong offense and defense but lower technique/magic Gender also plays a small role in your characters stats. Males have slightly higher health points, while females have higher magic points. This doesn't mean that men shouldn't be spell casters, or that woman shouldn't be melee fighters. Magic is used heavily by all classes to utilize their unique abilities, whether it be melee fighters throwing sonic booms or doing rising uppercuts, or gunners transforming their rifles into snipers or shotguns. Also the stat difference in between genders is small, and players can build their characters however they like. As for classes, there are 3 (for the moment. 3 more coming in september) and you can change them at will in the lobby. They are: Hunter, the melee fighter. Ranger, the gunner. Force, the wizard. While 3 character classes might seem small to those used to rpg's with huge laundry lists of potential jobs, it should be noted that your class does not pigeon hole you into one role or play style. Pso2's combat is vastly more focused on putting the action in action-rpg, and so the 3 classes correspond more to game genre, allowing you to play it as a fighter, a shooter, or whatever the hell genre nuking the **** out of everything as a wizard is. Your role on the battlefield is decided by your actions on it, not by your choices beforehand. Beyond your choices at the beginning of the game, you have a vast amount of options in building your character afterwards. Besides just the weapon types you adopt and the unique abilities and spells you choose to use for them, players can build their characters stats how they see fit and assign stats and abilities to their weapons. Any desired stat set up should be achievable, from glass cannon or tank, to balanced guy or support. PVP Though the original PSO had Pvp, PSO2 has none at the moment. Music Pso2's soundtrack is being handled by Hideaki Kobayashi, who composed the absolutely beloved soundtrack for the original PSO series. The stage themes are mostly atmospheric, but boss themes take a turn for the more intense. The game also utilizes a new system, dubbed SYMPATHY, in which the music is mixed heavily based on what is taking place in game. a more detailed explanation can be found here. (http://bumped.org/psublog/phantasy-star-online-2s-dynamic-music-system-sympathy/) Signing up, language, and money Pso2, unlike it's predecessor, is free to play online. The game is only in Japanese at the moment. However there are two options for western players. One can either use the excellent guide at bumped.org, which translates basically the entire game (http://bumped.org/psublog/pso2-guide-list/), or use the fan made english patch (http://psumods.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=206). The game does have payed for content, but it is all aesthetic only and does not boost gameplay in any way. Testimony from other players Quote from: Zero254 This is everything a Sega game should be Quote from: Gayraliru This... is the ****ING BEST GAME EVER! I have never played such a great MMO! Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Zero254 on July 16, 2012, 04:56:36 pm For the time being you should try out regular pso1 as you might find a bunch of sega stuff that you like.
It's got nostalgia for people who like that, and the sound track is REALLY GOOD. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on July 16, 2012, 05:15:00 pm Cry for 'IDOLA' the holy

Also worth noting that they are among the first 2 or 3 bosses, and the game gets WAY harder as it goes on. It's funny, yesterday I was playing an action game that I thought was the ****, but comparing it to this, it doesn't feel half as responsive or tight. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: GeneralGrant on July 17, 2012, 12:02:35 am **** would i have to know how to read that?

If you like fighting giant monsters with responsive, skill based combat, with adventuring and rpg'ing, then you'll like this.
Anyway no rush. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: GeneralGrant on July 17, 2012, 04:56:16 am i haven't played many rpgs or 3rd person games but i'll give it a go if it would make you happy to see me fail
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on July 17, 2012, 05:03:17 am lol. Whenever you want. Also you played Minecraft. That's a pretty heavy rpg
If you really like shooting, you can pick ranger and use over the should manual aiming. ALSO ZERO TALK TO ME BABY WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH MINUS STATS? CAN THEY BE ANYTHING ELSE THEN NEGATIVE IMPACTS ON YOUR WEAPONS DAMAGE? I'M CONFUZZLED. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: MrPillow on July 17, 2012, 04:16:39 pm This is free right? I'll get it because of that, lol. Steam's being a pos and not working for me atm.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Alumar on July 17, 2012, 04:18:23 pm Yes it is. I was just about to get it but then remembered i'm on OS X and I'm too lazy to dual-boot.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on July 17, 2012, 04:22:08 pm This is free right? I'll get it because of that, lol. Steam's being a pos and not working for me atm. YUP. AND DON'T WORRY, I'M NOT ON STEAM ATM EITHERAnyway Zello pls Talk to me about dem weapon stats Where does it say how high level I have to be to use a weapon? Cause I found a decent whip knife thingy but I can't use it yet even though my sword does more damage lol Also I still need to know what the deal is with negative stats. Anything that's not my sword has like -90 on it. It's not doing as little damage as one would think, but it's not great damage either. You said negative stats are not always bad? Explain pleaaaase. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: MrPillow on July 17, 2012, 04:27:41 pm where do i get this game again, btw?
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on July 17, 2012, 04:33:20 pm Here's the english guide
http://bumped.org/psublog/pso2-guide-list/ Tells basically everything one needs to know to navigate the Basically everything gameplay related is there. No translated lore or story stuff, but everything you need to play the game 100% is there. Anyway for singing up http://bumped.org/psublog/phantasy-star-online-2-pre-open-beta-registration-guide/ Basically the same as registering for any forum or web site, just in Japanese. If you have trouble, which you shouldn't cause it's easy, then talk to me or zero on steam about it. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: MrPillow on July 17, 2012, 04:35:14 pm I appreciate it bro, +1. I'll get to figuring all that out when I get off work tonight. PILLOW OUT, my man
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on July 17, 2012, 04:49:56 pm Yeah, also make sure you got your controllers working on your pc. The game is equally friendly to both keyboard/mouse and controller set ups, but you'll probably the find the former a bit awkward if you're not used to pc vidya gaems (I can't use it for the life of me either). Zero uses Xbox 360 controller, and I use Ps3 controller (minus the analog sticks for some reason) and both work good. You just might wanna make sure all systems are go on that front before you dive in.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Zero254 on July 17, 2012, 10:08:52 pm Negative on certain things isn't bad.
It could be negative tech which doesn't matter for your class. If it was for ability, it would matter since it would affect your photon arts. Check which stat it is that is negative. Compare the Kanji. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on July 18, 2012, 04:17:34 am Yes I see. Do you know which stats are which though?
(http://i471.photobucket.com/albums/rr76/Squire_Grooktook/pso20120718_011320_000.jpg) All of my weapons have negative stats on that first stat right below the pp. The rare gun blade I got also has a +150 stat on the one right below that. Also, nearly every weapon drop I'v gotten lately has had massive negatives on it. Am I cursed or something? AND MR.PILLOW AND THE REST HERE'S SOME DECENT VIDEO INTRODUCTIONS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-AaCPE1VM0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCZCBurm-ag YOU STILL NEED TO READ THE GUIDE THOUGH Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Zero254 on July 18, 2012, 05:16:46 am son, that is showing the atk difference.....
Use dem context clues. Your sword is grinded +9 and has way higher atk that everything elses you have. The gunblade has 150 on it for upping your ranged damage. Below that is tech which doesn't matter for you too much right now. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: GeneralGrant on July 18, 2012, 05:38:21 am that's what i'm saying ^
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on July 18, 2012, 02:33:46 pm OH WOW HOW DID I NOT SEE THAT
that's what i'm saying ^ Zero Wing: WHAT YOU SAY?Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Zero254 on July 18, 2012, 09:57:11 pm WE ARE THE CATS.
You know we redid the intro of that game ingame for fun. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on July 25, 2012, 04:24:18 pm I AM SO HAPPY THEY PUT BACK IN DARK RAGNE EMERGENCY MISSION
What's best is that the level lock is extremely low. Supposed to be level 33, but I can get in at 23. GOOD EXP AND CHALLENGING FIGHT Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Zero254 on July 25, 2012, 06:00:24 pm I destroy that boss in seconds though.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on July 25, 2012, 07:19:15 pm Yeah because you have damage.
I have no damage as well as having to be close at all times. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Zero254 on July 25, 2012, 07:20:20 pm THAT DOES NOT FLY, 90% OF THE TIME I AM RIGHT NEXT TO HIM.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on July 25, 2012, 07:24:03 pm OK BUT MY POINT ABOUT DAMAGE REMAINS VALID
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Zero254 on July 25, 2012, 07:27:15 pm NAW IT DOES NOT, YOU COULD GET LIGHT WEAPONS PLUS STATUS EFFECT INFLICTION.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on July 25, 2012, 07:29:52 pm THAT WOULD BECAUSE I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO FIND OTHER SWORDS AND PARTISANS OF THE KIND I AM USING. LET ALONE WITH LIGHT AND OR STATUS ELEMENTAL BONUSES.
IS POISON REALLY THAT GOOD ALSO? Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Zero254 on July 25, 2012, 07:42:14 pm You realize you can fuse weapons right?
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on July 25, 2012, 07:50:47 pm Yeah, but they have to be of the same type right?
Also I just realized a sword techique I have is MUCH better against bosses then I thought. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on August 08, 2012, 04:51:09 am Okay, so there was a scare earlier today that Sega was gonna make Japanese servers off limits to westerners. But apparently that wasn't quite accurate, and was merely a clause in the terms of service that was there since the alpha.
So anyway, I'v been convincing all my friends to play the game. Here's the current list of peeps I know who are playing it. I tried to explain the feel of the game, while not getting too deep into stuff like how just guarding works or how to fuse/grind weapons. I'd highly recommend anyone who is interested by the game (or just wants to get me to stop pestering them about it) to take a look and see if it seems like your kind of game. Also if you feel daunted by the sign up process (though I can't imagine why since the guide makes it easy), pm me and/or Zero.

Basically, if your not in Japan and you already made an account, you're fine. But western players can no longer make new accounts for the Japanese servers as of the moment. So if you have any friends who you wanted to play the game with, but they didn't register yet, then you're out of luck. So this pretty much confirms I'll be switching over to the western servers. I'll keep the Japanese account open just in case, but unless the Western servers are REALLY behind on content (don't really see it happening) or some of my friends just refuse to play on the Western Servers, I probably won't be coming back to the Japanese servers. *edit* Region lock lifted. That being said... Quote from: psoworld forums user I like how people said they'd probably lift it, that this was just a test run, and that whatever they really wanted to implement was going to come later. As in, whatever it is they actually intend to do is going to be bigger scale. Hopefully just region-locked downloads, but anything is possible at this point. We're not in the clear. Don't go spending a quazillion dollars on AC unless you're still okay with losing access to it. Just be ready for the worst, is all. I'm not saying the worst will happen, but it's foolish to think we're safe now because of something that was entirely expected. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Rulep on November 13, 2012, 04:33:45 pm This is why I'm not toucing the game. A transfert o the Western server would be nice.
Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on November 13, 2012, 09:33:42 pm I'm gonna just play it for fun.
Running the new levels and bosses solo on hard without healing is incredibly fun and hard. I will be good. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Zero254 on November 18, 2012, 11:11:27 am learn to read grook. stop dissapointing me too.
psoworld is not a good news source. they will panic if a server goes onn light maintenence. bad article doesn't mention jp players could not register either because they were updating the servers for sega's website. what a bunch of fools Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Squire Grooktook on November 18, 2012, 01:48:30 pm Sure. But I'm still leaning toward switching over.
Mostly because I have SO MANY **** people right now who won't play until official western server is up. Title: Re: Phantasy Star Online 2 Post by: Zero254 on November 27, 2012, 05:24:38 am I'm good, I'm staying put.
