Title: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 18, 2012, 08:30:40 pm hooray.
Any of you know anything about this stuff? I don't. *Copies/pastes what I posted on another forum* I just had the AMD 7770 installed by Best Buy, got it home, tried turning on Borderlands and Left 4 Dead 2 and they both immediately freeze. I could play them before at low graphics, now I can't play them at all. I just spent $400 getting this card and having it installed, also had a new power supply installed (450W I think) because apparently I had a 250W one before, which "wasn't good enough". So, this new power supply STILL isn't good enough is what I'm thinking? UGHH. Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 18, 2012, 08:33:16 pm Wow dude, Best Buy just raped you bad.
Anyways, it's probably a driver issue. Did you install AMD Catalyst? Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Laughing Turd on July 18, 2012, 08:33:44 pm I honestly don't know. I just know that Best Buy/Geek Squad sucks ass. Can you get a refund on the instillation?

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=363299 If none of that works, tell Best Buy to fix your ****, and do NOT let them charge you to fix their mistakes. Be an **** if you have to. Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 18, 2012, 08:35:44 pm I honestly don't know. I just know that Best Buy/Geek Squad sucks ass. Can you get a refund on the instillation? Genuinely doubt it.A 7770 costs $150 at most and a quality 450 psu costs $45 (Corsair 80 plus). You do the math. Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 18, 2012, 08:36:23 pm I didn't install it, but it's on my computer... so I have it. :P I don't know what to do with it though...
ya LT they are retarded apparently. It also took me an hour to figure out how to turn this thing on after getting it back, they didn't tell me I had more things to plug my HDMI in to at the bottom, I had to call them to get that straightened out. Finally, I got it on... doesn't work. WOOOOOOHHHHHOOOOOO Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 18, 2012, 08:38:24 pm A 7770 costs $150 at most and a quality 450 psu costs $45 (Corsair 80 plus). You do the math. The 7770 was $200. The power supply, which apparently fails, costed $90 Each was supposed to have a $50 installation fee, but he charged $50 instead of $100. yippeee Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 18, 2012, 08:41:22 pm http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161402 :-X
Could've bought a 560 ti for that price. Did you check if they installed AMD Catalyst? If not, try installing the latest version. Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 18, 2012, 08:42:52 pm Yes I have AMD Catalyst, like I said. Also, like I said... idk what to do with it.
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 18, 2012, 08:51:44 pm Oh yeah, got lost in all the words :P
You got me there. I suck at fixing things I can't see. The folks at www.overclock.net/f/ (http://www.overclock.net/f/) are amazing at helping people out though, give em a try. Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Zero254 on July 19, 2012, 12:03:41 am oh, I didn't see this topic.
The first thing to do is to check your connections to the graphics card. Make sure it is getting what it needs. It may have come with molex adapters to convert the connections. The next thing to do is to completely wipe the old drivers from the system. I believe you should also run DXDIAG and then do all of the video tests and see if they are successful. I will say try those first and then come back. Also if you need hardware help, I can walk you through doing almost anything, step by step. Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 19, 2012, 04:48:06 pm lol I'm not doing shiiiiit myself. Best Buy has it back, they must fix it or iRefunded. b)
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 19, 2012, 05:01:01 pm $50 for a 2 minute install. Sounds fair.

The toughest part is insalling a power supply because of all the connections and stuff. I tried doing that last week and failed miserably, but a quick google search led me to the motherboard's manual. Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Zero254 on July 19, 2012, 05:59:14 pm I didn't notice you paid them to do the job.
By all means, refund or have them fix it. Make them test it on the spot. Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 20, 2012, 04:50:34 pm Well, problem was solved after they did 100 tests, they decided to replace the gfx card with another identical one... it works. It was a defective card. wtf. -_-
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 20, 2012, 04:52:15 pm That's good news. Next time, avoid best buy. Buy the card yourself if you have to and take it to a tech shop and you'll save a lot more.
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Zero254 on July 20, 2012, 08:42:56 pm ^
I give my approval to this. Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 20, 2012, 09:46:50 pm The "main guy" there wanted to avoid doing that at all costs, cause it's inconvenient and would mean one less sale for them.
Too bad it was inconvenient for me to wait 2 days. Also, Skyrim still won't run properly. yay I have a feeling it's that dumb power supply, my computer is above the "recommended" specs to play Skyrim. Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 20, 2012, 09:48:09 pm Skyrim is more CPU heavy than most games.
Post your specs. Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 20, 2012, 10:02:45 pm Operating System

Probably driver issues with Skyrim.
http://www.fraps.com/ Frap's good for knowing how many FPS you're getting. Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 20, 2012, 10:10:32 pm What do I do with it? ???
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 20, 2012, 10:14:04 pm You just run it in the background and once you get into a game it will display the FPS on one of the corners. It's good for lowering the details if you're running low fps.
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 20, 2012, 10:32:51 pm Run it in the background? It's a screen recorder... I really don't understand. You want me to record Skyrim?
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 20, 2012, 10:34:16 pm You have Skype or Steam we can message each other on?
If so add Skype: uadoublegunz Steam: Double_Gunz Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 20, 2012, 10:39:04 pm No, FRAPS also works for showing you the FPS you're getting in the game just in case the game you're playing doesn't have that option.
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 20, 2012, 11:20:40 pm Well I did it, it was almost always 60.
It froze once I got near water. lol I was only on medium settings, I should be able to go a bit higher but it's gon' crash anyways. Silly thing. Borderlands runs perfectly fine at high. Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 22, 2012, 06:11:14 pm So... Borderlands crashes once in a while, I dropped the graphics down and that doesn't seem to change anything, so the graphics don't matter. Skyrim freezes quite a bit. I really don't understand this. :-\
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 22, 2012, 07:05:02 pm Have you researched if AMD has graphics issues with those games?
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 22, 2012, 07:38:36 pm No, but the only possible explanation I've found is that my power supply might not be good enough, even though I already paid $90 to upgrade to this one. I have a 520W one now, but it's Dynex (crappy BBuy brand)... apparently that might be why. The minimum requirement says 450W for this 7770.
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 22, 2012, 08:26:12 pm I just ran Skyrim on "Ultra" settings and played fine for a few minutes, then I quit. It didn't crash but it usually doesn't until after 20 min or so. We'll see. This is weeeeeeird. :o
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 22, 2012, 08:31:41 pm Trust me it's not the PSU. The 7770 is one of the least power hungry cards on the market at the moment.
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 22, 2012, 09:04:08 pm Well I don't get it. Just played on ultra settings for like 30 minutes with no problems at all. On medium and lower it froze. :-X
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: DoubleGunz on July 22, 2012, 09:08:15 pm Actually, when running on full I was in fullscreen, where before I always played in windowed mode. Would this affect it? Is windowed harder to process or something?
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 22, 2012, 09:08:32 pm You should run Prime95 for 12 hours and check if your system is stable.
Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: MrPillow on July 22, 2012, 11:36:11 pm I'mma pop a question in here while we're talking about it:
I have crappy integrated graphics, and my card only always 64mb of ram to the video processing. Is there anyway to take my total amount of RAM (4.1) and attribute more to my video card? Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 22, 2012, 11:52:08 pm I'mma pop a question in here while we're talking about it: Not if it was designed to only use a certain amount of that shared memoy. And even then you won't gain much performance on games because the clocks on the GPU and memory probably suck as well. Is it a desktop?I have ****ty integrated graphics, and my card only always 64mb of ram to the video processing. Is there anyway to take my total amount of RAM (4.1) and attribute more to my video card? Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: MrPillow on July 23, 2012, 02:52:06 am *only allows 64
and yeah, its an integrated graphics chip. i use a laptpo. dell inspiron with the intel chipset family 4 Title: Re: Got New Gfx card, doesn't work Post by: Alumar on July 23, 2012, 02:56:00 am Intel GMA is ****, but i'm guessing you already knew that. The only good intel gfx are the latest HD4000 and they're only good at computing and encoding. |
