Title: My World So Far
Post by: GeneralGrant on July 24, 2012, 07:29:02 am
it's got a lot of work to be done but i thought things were starting to come together and i'd share the better half of my world  O0 and i should have filmed in day so you could see the island in the sky better but whatever

What program do you use to record?  Looks like you weren't getting any framerate drops whatsoever.

Also, we should... we should do a survival island.  With Zyrtec too, if he's up for it.  And we should record it.

Excellent

I'm free pretty much every week day until about 5 PM EST.  Once school starts I can record at night, but my living quarters are too noisy at night while I'm at home for the summer.

i was just using quicktime player. when it's not fast forwarded it drops a lot of frames and i can't set it to pick up the game sound...only the sound of my voice and all so i always have to drop the sound if i don't want the viewer to hear me clicking. i fast forwarded it to 175% cause it looks smoother faster and you can still tell what's going on. also i recorded a 30 minute speed build of that floating island thing and it was really cool and when i go to edit it, quicktime had skipped and didn't record a good bulk of it that made it pointless. basically it doesn't work well but i'd still be up for doing a survival island, that sounds fun! i'm available basically whenever

Well that sucks.  I use Camtasia and it's a fantastic piece of software, but it tends to make my framerate drop a bit.  I've tried running off an external hard drive I have but that didn't help.

Anyway, as for the survival island thing, we don't have to record it.  It'd be fun just doing it by itself.

Recording is very demanding on hard drives unless they're on raid. Get an ssd. :P

It has a thirty day free trial period. But you can just enter a fake email and get it continuously that way.

Check it out.  Excellent piece of software.

Plan to, but right now I'm unemployed and just went through the Summer Sale.

Waiting's not a bad idea. SSD prices will only keep going down. I bought mine for $250 and now it can be found under $200 and i've not even had it for 2 months.

Yeah, I'm looking at getting one around Christmas.  Might catch a good deal on Newegg, who knows.

what is a ssd?

Solid state disk.  Basically a really efficient hard drive.

You know how hard drives have moving parts in them right? Well SSDs don't. Which is why they're obscenely faster than mechanical drives and are pretty much indestructible.

I can't imagine using a computer without an SSD after making the switch. Even if it's a relatively slow 40gb SSD, the difference will be night and day. Mine's 256gb :D

With an SSD you can shut your computer in under 2 secs, turn it on around 20-30 and once the desktop loads you can instantly open apps and not have to wait a minute like hard drives. Although on Macs with little ram SSD doesn't really feel as fast as I had hoped. Macs are ram hogs.

i mean they seem to be better in general but when you have all the options you can upgrade and all with other computers it doesn't seem worth it to spend so much money up front

Especially when they abandon your hardware in:

3 years for macs
as soon as it was released for mac pros
and every year for iOS devices.

I know a lot of people would appreciate it.  One of the biggest barriers to the PC gaming master race is that people think it's too expensive, but you can get a solid gaming desktop for $400.  And with stuff like Steam, you'll eventually save that extra $150 you spent on the desktop instead of getting the PS3 by discounts on games you'd get anyway.

Plus you get a badass pc that won't choke wheb you have more than 5 tabs opened.

No joke.  Oh, and people buy PCs anyway to access the internet, so that's a big point as well.

my comp is 5 years old and it runs Deus Ex: Human Revolution at 60 FPS just fine

i'm using a newer graphics card zero gave me, but if you're using onboard video your computer is going to suck no matter how new it is

I always hear this, but I've never seen evidence. I need something to run animation programs every day.

$400 may be a bit exagerated, but do-able. I'd recommend $500-$600 and that's not including accesories/monitors.

If it's gaming you could get away with a sandy bridge i3. However if it's for something more demanding that requires more threads/cores you really need to step up to Intel's i5/i7.

Well you won't be running Skyrim on max settings with a $400 setup, but you'll run Skyrim just fine.  O0

Also, the i7 is a thing of beauty.

haha so if i'm looking into more games than just minecraft i'll probably have to start thinking about spending more money on a laptop or computer...hmm this is frustrating me. i really wanted to spend some money on some new band shirts and stuff like that  :-\

Pretty much. But once you have a good pc you can do a lot more **** other than just play games.
