Title: So I picked Dark Souls back up.
Post by: JabbaScrub on June 14, 2013, 01:42:41 am
I've been playing new characters for about a week now, and I now have a level ~54 endurance-focused knight in Sen's and an SL1 Pyro who just got gangbanged by the two silver knight archers in Anor Lando. I cannot believe I've had this game since release and I'm just now getting into it.

THIS GAME IS AMAZING.

Yes it is.

Doing a SL1 run with a pyro after pyromancy got nerfed?  You are brave.

Wow, the Four Kings fight is absolutely brutal. That was the biggest adrenaline rush I've gotten from a game, including my first PvP encounters. My hands were shaking so much I could hardy play  :D  I'm going to go get that Kindling flame so I can get that 20 estus, though running out isn't my problem so much as getting beat down while I try to recover. I'm also going to upgrade a weapon to +5 Chaos if I can manage it and finish my pyro flame. I believe it only needs one more ascended upgrade.

Which weapon should I upgrade? I have a +5 Raw Reinforced Club (picked it up as +1 Raw from a Gravelord), a +4 Lightning, +10 normal and three +5 normal. I'm planning on getting a set of +5 clubs in each upgrade tree, other than magic. I was thinking a +5 Chaos Battle Axe, since speed is the key in this fight.

Turbo and DG, I expect you both to reply to this.   >:(

Edit: Ah, there you are  :)  I honestly think Pyro is easier. Almost all the enemies can be exploited by their slow moveset and long tells. The only problem I've had compared to my knight this far are Darkwraith enemies with their combos that are impossible to get out of once you're caught , and the Four Kings. I've learned how to deal with Darkwraiths so now the only problem with them is patience.

I haven't used Iron Flesh but a few times; will it sustain all the Kings' attacks unblocked?

Don't Chaos weapons scale with humanity?

If that's the case then I'd be careful about that, as dying would screw you over magnificently.  Lightning/fire might be a better option for a SL 1 run, as they do consistent damage.

The battle axe is a joke.  I recommend the Baldur side sword, which you can get as a drop from the non-rapier Baldur knights in the Undead Chapel.  It has a quick moveset, as well as thrusting and slashing attacks.  Great versatility.  It scales with dexterity, but you can make it lightning/fire and avoid that entirely.

If you're just going to upgrade the weapons you currently have, get that Lightning +4 to +5.

Yeah those are nasty.  But if you're an endurance-focused knight, you should be able to roll/block all of their attacks fairly easily and then retaliate.  Just watch out for their Dark Hand attack.

If you are still on the Four Kings, the easiest way to beat them is to just suit up in Havel's Armor, get the Ring of Steel Protection on, put the Grass Crest Shield on your back for added stamina regen, and use your other ring slot for whatever you want.  If you have an Estus Flask +2 at least (which you should at this point) and at least 10 uses of it, you can just tank them.  Make sure you have a high DPS though, 'cause you don't want to be fighting more than one at a time.

I decided to just go with lightning. I'm stuck t +4 though, where can I get another titanite slab?

I got so close two times. Once I was within one hit of victory when I got anxious and tried another R1. I'm fine with that; it was my own fault. The other I got grabbed   >:( Yeah, I heard that works well but it's just too cheap. I want to be able to honestly say I beat them the right way. I guess I'll farm some souls for my pyro hand and find a slab for my club.

It really is demoralizing to get killed on your way to a boss..

Itsa good game.

Right now I'm trying to replay Mega Man ZX Advent on hard without getting game over (no save points used). It's a similarly amazing experience.
Oh and Rayforce is the same. And Contra. And Gradius. I don't know why more Souls Series players don't pick up old arcade style games, it's such a similar experience in so many ways.

Well aside from the side-scrolling style, much of the draw for Dark Souls is all the RPG elements.

Yeah, I think part of what is best about it is how it brings all those different genre's together in a way that makes them all work. Rpg'ing, pvp, exploration, character building, action. Souls series really has it all.

Yeah, it's the first RPG I've played with a leveling system that doesn't force you to grind (well, a little bit for some things if you really want them).

I got my Flame to +5, Club to +5 lightning, got Dawn's Circlet and bought the Bellowing Dragoncrest ring. All of that and I went from having four kings around me at 1/2 boss health to killing each with 20 seconds to spare. I really didn't expect those things to have such a huge impact. I got them all first try, and made plenty of mistakes.

Being an SL1 Darkwraith really is the most fun you can have in this game. I usually just try to intimidate people, and really only try to kill their phantoms before I open up and drop my guard all the way down. There is so much variety. One invasion you're circling around an SL15 knight teasing them, the next you're in a delightfully honorable PvP match. I just wish there were still new people on though, I mostly only get long-time players doing new builds.

I've decided I'll round up enough Humanity through invading as I need to get the Chaos Servant scrolls, then properly abandon Darkwraiths and switch back once I'm done. I wanted to do it before then but I never had enough at one time.

I'll also upgrade my Chaos club the rest of the way (couldn't get a sword like Turbo suggested). Since Chaos scales with Humanity, it's a Darkwraith's best friend.   >:D

Well that's a lot of chatter. Uhh, yes. Dark Souls.  ^-^

Yeah I know it's a lot haha, I just can't stop talking about it. (http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/6979/wuvli2.gif)

I've already started to grow bored of Sl1 invading.. I've started a sorcerer who I'll get into the Darkwraith covenant, then wear robes with a scythe and use dark magic. I'm sure I'm not the first, but it sounds like fun to roleplay the Reaper.  :D

Was this with your knight?  Were you using buff spells on your weapon?

Low-level invading is a lot of fun, especially if you have gear around the same strength as theirs.  Can't be reckless since everyone's so squishy.

My favorite is invading in the Duke's Archives.  So much fun with the stairs.

I don't like invading, and I refused to ever do it myself. It's just rude.

No it's not.  If someone reverses hollowing they have the option of summoning human players (or OP NPC phantoms) to help them through the level.  Summoning would be a seriously broken mechanic if it didn't come with the risk of getting your ass invaded.

Nah, I'd prefer if the enemies just scaled.

Title: Re: So I picked Dark Souls back up.

No amount of enemy scaling would match facing a real person.

Meh, I just don't like the idea of invading.

But you like the idea of summoning?

Title: Re: So I picked Dark Souls back up.
Post by: DoubleGunz on June 17, 2013, 05:19:48 pm
Yes, but that's the only aspect of the game I wish was more accessible. As in, simple to just invite friends if you want to experience it that way with scaling enemies.

Edit: This goes with my belief that most/all games that aren't story-driven should have co-op.

I agree with you on that point.  Fortunately there's a mod for the PC version that allows you to play with your friends more easily.

I hope the whole "more accessible, but not any less difficult" approach to DS2 brings forth some better ways to play co-op with friends.

Nah, my SL1 Pyro. No other buffs or anything. My knight is still at the beginning of Sen's lol.

Do you ever backstab in PvP?

Have either of you played the PC version? If so, is there a noticeable decrease in lag?

I don't PvP.  :P

On the odd chance that I was invaded, I just fought them however seemed necessary, I guess.

In PvP?  Yes.  I prefer the PC version in just about every respect, except there are fewer people online.

So you can actually parry and backstabs aren't cheap lag moves? Oh man, that sounds amazing.

Title: Re: So I picked Dark Souls back up.
Post by: Turboweasle on June 19, 2013, 08:53:53 am
Yep, backstabs are pretty useless in PC PvP because it's stupid easy to read them.  I've parried and been parried quite a lot, too, and I didn't have to rely on guessing when my opponent was going to attack.

Post by: JabbaScrub on June 19, 2013, 12:12:44 pm
I'm definitely getting DS2 for the PC, and getting a suped up desktop. That really just sounds so perfect. I love parrying in solo but hate that it's just a guessing game, and backstabbing would actually be respectable if it was about punishing your opponent for a stupid mistake.

Title: Re: So I picked Dark Souls back up.
Post by: Turboweasle on June 19, 2013, 01:27:04 pm
Yep, the only time I've backstabbed an opponent was when I wrecked his phantom and he tried to run away from me.

And thankfully you don't need an incredible gaming rig to play Dark Souls on PC.  I'm assuming DS2 will be the same way.
