Title: I've played every SHMUP on Steam now Post by: Squire Grooktook on August 18, 2013, 10:03:48 pm With the exception of Razor 2 but that looks like ****.
Here is my Exceed 2nd > Satazius > GundeadLigne > Gundemonium Recollection > Exceed 3rd > Jamestown > Ether Vapor Remaster > Hitogatta Happa > Exceed: Gun Bullet Children > Sine Mora. Please note that I'm talking about shmups as in scrolling shooters, and not arena shooters (Geometry Wars, Robotron), Run and Gun shooters (Contra, Metal Slug, Bleed), or other games that feature shooting and/or are 2d. As if there weren't enough reasons to play the heck out of it. Title: Re: I've played every SHMUP on Steam now Post by: ĪSaucelotĪ on August 21, 2013, 03:07:41 pm What do you use for a controller with those, ps3 you said right?

Title: Re: I've played every SHMUP on Steam now Post by: ĪSaucelotĪ on August 25, 2013, 05:45:06 pm So squire, say I am in the mood for playing a shmup on steam, with my ps3 controller. What would you recommend, I like upgrades and co-op games remember.
Title: Re: I've played every SHMUP on Steam now Post by: Squire Grooktook on August 25, 2013, 07:22:28 pm Exceed 2nd and Satazius are tied for best shmups on Steam from a pure quality standpoint imo. The design of both games just feels fundamentally good. Though Exceed doesn't have co op or power ups. Satazius lets you choose your weapons, and you unlock more with each boss you kill. The weapons you use level up by going through the stages with them, so you can develop your own playing style.
For co-op, Jamestown is supposed to have some of the best co op in a shmup ever. It's local multiplayer only though, unfortunately. GundeadLigne also has online co op, though how smoothly it goes will depend on your connection. Exceed 2nd is based on the concept that all bullets and hazards come in two different colors, and the player character can switch colors as well. You die if struck by something of the opposite color, and you absorb attacks of the same color to power up your super weapon. It's a lot like a better version of Ikaruga, if you've ever played that. Satazius is a horizontally scrolling shooter with an emphasis on clever environmental hazards. Title: Re: I've played every SHMUP on Steam now Post by: ĪSaucelotĪ on August 26, 2013, 10:31:59 pm Satazius sounds tempting, I think I watched some vids of it before. It does have co-op thouugh?
Title: Re: I've played every SHMUP on Steam now Post by: Squire Grooktook on August 27, 2013, 12:53:38 am Unfortunately no.
Title: Re: I've played every SHMUP on Steam now Post by: ĪSaucelotĪ on August 27, 2013, 03:09:33 pm Damn, oh well I guess I dont end up playing as many co-op games as I'd like anyway. As long as it has controller support ill play it for 5.99
Title: Re: I've played every SHMUP on Steam now Post by: Squire Grooktook on August 27, 2013, 07:25:53 pm Keep in mind that you unlock the harder difficulties by 1cc'ing (that is, beat the game without getting a single game over) each difficulty. So if you beat normal mode there's more to do.
Title: Re: I've played every SHMUP on Steam now Post by: Zero254 on September 15, 2013, 09:46:15 pm Jamestown being before hitogata happa makes me think you didn't fight tlb.
Title: Re: I've played every SHMUP on Steam now Post by: Squire Grooktook on September 16, 2013, 02:30:30 am You mean The Conquistador (Jamestown TLB) or Kreutzer (HH TLB)? I wouldn't be surprised if Hittogatta Happa surpassed Jamestown once I play it more (as Ether Vapor already has). I think Jamestown is a tad over-rated, to be honest. It's a good game, has a great aesthetic and a pretty fun scoring system, but the bullet patterns and variety are a bit wanting. It's not that the bullet patterns aren't hard enough (there are like 6 difficulty settings, after all), they just kinda lack that extra bit of complexity (or depth) and variety (you dodge them all pretty much the same way) that make for a truly legendary shooter. Now I know you could say "WELL JUST PLAY ON JUDGEMENT/ULTRA/GOD MODE THEN", but a good shmup shouldn't need to go all die-kill-you in order to have fun level design. I mean Dodonpachi and Gradius are fun on EVERY loop. I also feel like the stages try a bit too hard to be gimmicky, but most of the gimmicks are over before you know it, and they don't really change the way you play very much. But that's just me. Still a good game though, and I'm sure a lot of fans would disagree with me about what I just said. Subjectivity etc. |
