Title: Solid State Drive
Post by: Laughing Turd on January 11, 2014, 06:18:53 pm
I bought an ssd on black friday and haven't installed it yet. Ideally I'd like to instal the OS and a couple of games on it and that's it. However, my PC boots pretty damn fast already and I'm ready to go in under a minute. That, coupled with my extreme laziness to back everything up, doings a fresh instal of Windows 8 on the SSD and then re-downloading eeeeeeeeeeverything and setting it all up, is making me think it would be better off if I just installed it and used it for gaming purposes only.

Is that acceptable or is instant booting too much of a valuable feature to pass up?

If you don't mind the ~1 minute wait time I'd say you're fine as is.  Plus if you devote your entire SSD to games you'll have stupid fast loading times for new areas and stuff, although that's likely the case with your rig to begin with.

Oh, don't get me wrong man. I'd say my PC is pretty competent but it's not stupid fast by any means. My PC gets around 30fps average in DayZ right now. If you go to any streamers site, they'll be getting easily 120. That's a stupid fast pc. As far as load time when entering new areas, I'd say it's pretty quick, yeah. Skyrim is pretty much instant.

Still, you're right, I'd like for it to boot games a lot faster and get into it as fast as it can.

10/10 advice. would be advised again.

actually, i just researched it a little bit more and i think installing the os would give me a larger overall performance impact. i now think it would be a waste to only use it for gaming.

dammit. oh well, i guess i'll take the plunge.

Hello everyone, long time no see.  Turd, I just built a gaming PC a few months ago and trust me, SSD is well worth it.  I am curious though, why did you go with windows 8 and not 7?

I'm into a lot of things.  ;)

Also, some games were running better with Windows 8 so I went with that.

I still never invested in an SSD.  Battlefield 4 takes forever to load a multiplayer game on my d drive, but every other game I have loads pretty quickly, still on the fence about getting one.  I have windows 8 to LT  O0

for some reason my ssd doesn't load bf4 really fast. other games will load damn near instantly.

Lol I dont think ill be investing in one soon then, really BF4 is the only game I was thinking of getting it for, and I haven't really gotten into BF4 yet, dicked around on the range and played a few online matches and got destroyed.  Haven't played much battlefield since the first Bad Company.  If you play it for PC though I'll hop on with you.

To be honest, I don't play BF4 that much either. I play a lot with some friends from work and and they didn't end up like it that much. They thought it was a little hard to get the hang of it and ****. We started playing other games like DayZ and recently we're playing a ton of Loadout. It's a much more straight forward arena shooter. It's fun as hell. I suggest you try it out if you haven't yet. It's f2p but you can't buy any weapons with real money or anything.

I've always wanted to get into DayZ, just haven't, although I do have Arma II and operation arrowhead so I could just download DayZ again.  Do you have the steam version or what?  I have seen Loadout on steam, never gave it a chance though.  I've been playing payday 2 mostly myself.  Add me on steam btw, its saucelot_z.

DayZ is fun with a bunch of m8's. Otherwise, I assume it'd probably be boring. We usually run around gearing out only to get killed by one dude. sometimes we laugh our asses off and other times we're so assblasted  because we lose a 30 minute firefight vs a couple of dudes who keep calling us "niggers". I bought the standalone version on Steam.

I'll add you soon.

Also, try Loadout for sure. It's completely free and a bit harder to do well since everyone has like 20 times the health you get in say, Call of Duty.

I haven't played an old school style FPS in a while i'll try it out when I'm done leveling my guy in payday.  Also I dont think I can play on the same servers as you on DayZ, if you have the steam standalone version, and I have the mod version.

Oh, yeah, you're right. We'd have to have the same version of the game. The standalone version is bare bones. They're barely going to add bikes. We've been running everywhere for a couple of months.

Well you'll be able to add mods to it though right, just have to be ones made by the steam community.  I Just downloaded it with dayz commander btw, have a ton of games to play though including DayZ, don't know how far I want to venture in it off the bat without any friends lol.
