Title: Speed up your browser
Post by: BMan on January 22, 2014, 09:23:52 am
A friend of mine in the IT business turned me on to this.  Seems to work well. It replaces your default HOSTS file with one that blocks "ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and even most hijackers."  Do this once, and it works for all browsers on your computer.

BTW, your default HOSTS file (the one that gets replaced) is typically empty.

Here is the undo, if you have issues:

That's a cool idea. Never thought about doing that before. It'd take some effort to keep the list up to date though and I'm lazy and

I just looked quickly at the site, but did they have a batch file or anything for automatically updating the HOSTS file from the site?

Yeah.  I think you just have to go back periodically and download and run again.

Are there any security risks in using this methods?

I can't think of any security risks if you are just copying and pasting the list yourself. All it's doing is when your web browser is trying to go to an ad website, it directs your browser to go to your computer instead of the Internet, which of course goes nowhere.

So, if it goes to the PC it's not cached and won't clog up any memory?

No, it just basically dies. It tries to find the page and when your computer sends nothing back, that's it.

Awesome.  I'll try it.  My PC sucks as it is.

Anyone got any links to free malware, antivirus, pop up blocker?

If you're using Chrome or Firefox, Ad Blocker is the most downloaded "app" or whatever they call it.  Blocks the ads before YouTube videos as well, and pop-ups of course.
