Title: Softball season?
Post by: ĪSaucelotĪ on May 05, 2014, 07:56:13 am
Any of you fat lazy old men play softball?

Yes, indeed....I play in 2 leagues. They are both "orthodox", but one is much faster (mens league) than the other one (co-ed league).

Lol yeah I played a co-ed tourney before.  I dont know all the different names, theres about 3-4 different names for the same game type here.  Nobody plays actual fast pitch here anymore, just moonball/ slow pitch/ unlimited arc, and then theres a few smaller leagues of modified/ half whip where you can bring your arm to like bowling ball length or so idk lol.  Then there are a few tournies where we play 6-12 foot arc where its just an absolute home run derby.  What's orthodox for you guys?

Cool. Yeah, orthodox for us is the bowling ball motion. You can bring your arm back as far as you want, but it has to be a straight motion when you deliver. It can be pretty fast if you get a good pitcher, but nothing like whip pitch. I also play in a few slow pitch (6-12 foot arc) tourneys every year. Those could be home run derbies but they usually have some rule where you can only hit so many per game and then it's an out if you hit more or it counts as a double. Sometimes it's the +1 rule where you can hit one more than the other team currently has for home runs, so if they have 4 then you can have 5, but if you hit #6 then you are out, etc. There are usually a bunch of rules to keep the home runs and scoring down.

We don't have those rules in the orthodox leagues though. You can hit as many homers as you want. There's no stealing though.

I want to get a new bat this year. Bought one last year but it sucked....it was a Combat. I think I'll go with an Easton this year. I just have to figure out which ones are legal and good.

I played in a coed league a few years ago , about the second practice in the girl Jaime wanted to hangout afterwards ,so she came back to my house afterwards while I showered and changed . She ended up wanting to take a shower. Long story short we ended up boning and she turned into a complete stalker obsessed psychopath so I had to quit the team. That is my experience with softball, good times.

There is bunting and stealing supposedly in the modified I'm playing tonight, no idea how thats gonna go lol.  The 6-12 arc leagues which are about an hour from here I know have home run rules, where we play there aren't any.  The in town league I've played in ( unlimited ) uses a softer core ball i dont remember which one, its supposed to be restricted flight.  They also buy 6 bats at the start of every year ( just started this few years back ), and that's all you can use.  Its honestly done great things for the league, and I was so opposed to it before.

The better league I play in though, still unlimited, just started doing a bat compression test last year, and it has to be under 1200 maybe 1500 compression to get a sticker.  This league had a huge problem of shaved and rolled bats, little people and kids who aren't even ballplayers were hitting fly balls landing 20 feet over the fence like it was nothing, and it was way out of hand lol.

Anyways, yeah I used an Easton Salvo last year, I really liked it.  We also used two Miken Triads, and they were real good too, they broke in extremely fast though and when we got them tested again for playoffs, neither passed.  I got a louisville slugger Z 3000 this year, mostly because it has a big Z on it and came in digital camouflage.  It's been way too cold to use it yet though.  We usually order our bats from this softball express magazine, I know guys who've talked of batsbatsbats.com and another one similar to that I just can't think of it.  Softball express will show you all the new bats this year, the specs on all of them, if they are ASA approved and what not.  I'd say pick your bat out there, and then look around for the best deal on it.

Heres a pic of that bat too

Lol softball.

Post by: Termin8or on May 05, 2014, 10:21:55 am
Yeah, we have umps every game and they check for shaved bats and look for the stamps, so you can't get away with anything illegal. We have the same restrictions around compression. I don't know what the compression is for the league, but we use Worth Gold Dot balls and ASA 2004 stamps. We used to have looser restrictions around balls and it would be hard to keep them in the yard.

I looked at the Z3000 last year (or maybe it was the Z2000 then). I thought it looked pretty good, but I don't think I could find one with a ASA 2004 stamp....I think it was only the new ASA stamp or the USSSA stamp. Our team used a Louisville bat many years ago (15 years or so) and there were lots of home runs off that one.

I'm torn between balanced and end loaded bats too. I like the end loaded because it pulls you around with it, but I'm never sure if I can get the right swing in orthodox these days to use an end loaded (pitch speed varies with each pitcher)....it's fine for slo pitch because you have all day to swing.

Lol its funny you say that about the bat and balls.  I actually got the balanced version, just showed the pic of the end loaded, and  I just checked my bat and it only says ISF certified  2005 ??? .   I never used the worth gold dot balls before until we used in a tournament last year at the 6-12.  I didn't like them, they felt extremely light, and got dinged up easily, and ball that was hit hard left a dent in it lol.  They did fly out sometimes thats for sure, I'm just not sold on them like everyone else is in the league, I remember it being brought up that we were switching to them this year in town.  Can't say I remember what ball we were using before.

The other league we had used a ball called The Guru for years.  I know we've switched back and forth between that and "The Evil Ball", which I did just find on google and it is actually called that lol.  Ball compression wise I can't remember what is what, even with the Red/Gold Dot I know there is a ton of different compressions.

Anyways thats what are problem is too much thinking lol, this is a simple game.  I'll let you know what i think of the Z 3000, like I said I don't think i'll use it tonight because of the whether.

I'm not a fan of the Gold Dot. We find they don't fly out enough at all. I think our home run leader had 8 or 9 homers in 18 games or so :/ and we have some good hitters and good bats. I'm thinking about going all out this year and seeing how many I can actually hit if I just swing for the fence every time. I turn 40 this year and it's not like I'm a superstar, but I want to hit more than I ever have. Maybe a new bat will help  :)

I just emailed our team captain and he said we go by slow pitch bat standards because we aren't technically a fastpitch league, so I guess I can get an ISF or the new ASA stamp now. They made that change for this year. I think I'm good to go with almost any bat now. Wahoo!

Yeah, let me know how it goes with the Z 3000; although, it's too cold here, so I don't think I'll go with a multi-wall bat :/ I'll probably try a singlewall.

Haha you'd be middle of the pack for age on my team.  My old man is 54 and he is our leadoff hitter.  He is the oldest, but we have a bunch of guys in there 40's.  I used to be the youngest, 24, I think I might still be our youngest player on all my teams actually lol.  We play whole teams who aren't even my age.

Glad somebody else here appreciates this sport.  I dont know what I'd do if I softball season didn't come around every year, probably yell at kids over xbox live.

Lol, you young guys are too enthusiastic  :P I'm in the middle on our team too. But these days our team is pretty much mid-30s to mid-40s. We used to have some fathers on the team that were in their 60s and probably close to 70. We won our league last year which was pretty sweet because one of the teams we play has a bunch of guys in their 20s and they are very enthusiastic. It's was nice to humble them a bit  :)

And yeah, I used to play hockey in summer too, but not anymore, so softball is all I have to look forward to.

Never been asked to play, so i'll be playing kickball this summer. I use to be a decent runner, havent ran more then 1/4 mile at a jog pace in 3 years.

Yeah I hear ya on humbling the young guys, I know I'm young but I'm not into the cocky male cattle dung and can't stand a lot of the younger teams.

Did you play baseball growing up Soldier?  Most guys playing softball haven't ran more than home to first since last season.

Exactly, don't need to be in top physical condition....although I usually pull my left quad every year :/ Stretching doesn't seem to help. I think it's the way I twist when I leave the batter's box.

Lol pulled a hammy for the first time last year, everyone tells me to get used to it.

Game got cancelled, as we were on our way there, can't stand when they cancel it like that.

Played my first game tonight, town league with the league bats.  It was good, cold, we ended up losing actually, only had 9 guys and then one guy who was already hurt/ old lol, hurt his knee so he's gona be out for the season.  It's always one of those things, we either play with like 8 guys, or 13 guys show up one night.  Didn't think to pay attention to the ball, it did feel pretty light, had a different texture.  Few home runs flew out, didn't seem to travel any further than last year.

I don't start playing until the week after next. I'm glad because it's too cold here. I hate playing in the cold :/ I've played with snow flying before and it sucks.

I hear ya, its not pleasant.  There is a big softball tourney called softball in the snow thats put on every february, I've never played in it though.  It's more focused on getting loaded and raising money for something, but ppl do actually play, just not me

I played for a few teams with old baseball buddies when I was about 25ish. It was kinda fun, but the other teams that were all serious about it took the funn out of it. We were all pretty good baseball players... most were college ball players. But, we were playing in some league with dudes that acted like it  was the **** MLB of softball and basically took it out the park on every swing. We were just there to drink beer and have fun playing ball. I only played two seasons before I said **** it. I wouldn't mind playing again if it was a just for fun league. I dread having to get into good enough shape to run the bases full speed, lol. I'd probably fall over and die these days.

Winter softball is fun, if there is ice. Ever slide half the distance to a base and still slide past home plate?

Lakkus- you'd hate to face me. Im no A-Rod/some famous sports star, but I try when its league form.

Title: Re: Softball season?
Post by: Cadillak on May 07, 2014, 01:54:26 pm
It's not that we didn't try. We were all good ball players. But these dudes acted like this was pro-level softball. They had sponsors and **** and were all **** huge roided out aholes. They literally hit the ball out the park on almost every "pitch" and got all excited about everything... talking **** and acting like children. We wanted to play ball like we always had, just not so serious. We weren't pro softballers... we were baseball players. It's a pretty different game. None of us could "pitch" a softball like they could. We were used to trying to get on base and play for hits, no homeruns. We won like half our games, but it wasn't that fun.

Yeah I've played some teams like that, usually in tourneys, don't see a lot of them anymore though.  There is a lot of guys I play with and against that swing for the fence every at bat, but nothing like some of the city teams we used to play.  Used to see vendors selling juiced bats saying ASA and USSA approved in the parking lot, teams bringing their own cameramen and selling photos after, just ridiculous stuff for softball.

We do take it seriously, but we/ almost every team we play have coolers in the dugout, we all male cattle dung with eachother, everybody knows everybody kind of thing.  Here's a story for you though you might enjoy.

There was a team in town last year that were way too competitive.  We ended beating them in the championship in three games straight, which was priceless, and every single team wanted them to lose.  Never had a beer in their dugout the whole year, beat us twice in regular season ya know, we always are missing guys during the season.  All year they were talking about breaking home run records and having the best team ever assembled in the north country and other things along those lines.  This isn't an exaggeration, they beat one of the new teams in the league, who does't have a chance in hell of even winning a game, 43-1 in three innings the umps stopped it.  The rest of the year they took **** from everybody for it.  You'd hear them talking at the field about how they didn't run up the score it just happened.  This dude Joel Perry, tool, hit 6 home runs in that game.  You should have been there it was the single game home run record, this and that.  Our team doesn't get pissed, but I do a little by myself lol, I take a lot of things like that personally, especially when it embarrasses somebody else.

Anywho, come playoffs we make it the championship, few close games but with all our guys we're pretty decent.  Then we e beat them handily the first two games, the second and third of which we played back to back on one night.  The whole time our team is always joking, drinking beer, having a good time.  Their bench is always just silent, maybe a few arguments with wives lol.  Between games Joel goes over to Cat, one of the umps who's been there longer than Joels been alive and starts giving him **** about how the game ball we used in the last inning was "punky", it should have been switched out, this and that, he then takes the ball and throws it as far as he can in the woods lol.  He got tossed for the next game, which he should have been.  There was bitching and moaning.  We shut them out in the third game lol.  He's not allowed to shake hands or go on the field so some of our guys go into the dugout, just to be nice.  Some of us like me and my uncle look at eachother and are like **** that.  Within minutes there whole bench is gone, save this one guy Aaron, he's a good guy, probably one of the few on their team, stayed and had a beer with us and chatted for a bit.  There's more  O0

So theres quite a few of us there maybe 25-30 people in total, not even 15 minutes after the game is over one of our friends BJ is on his phone and starts saying how they're bitching about it....on facebook.  Theres a page for the league and there were essays written from some of these guys, not about our team, about how the umps wanted them to lose, everybody wanted them to lose, it was male cattle dung, the ball was rigged, we're not poor sports and don't like to ****, but thats obviously what we're doing lol that sort of stuff.  And we don't want to take anything away from St. Marys Livestock ( our team/ sponsor ), but that's not how we'd like to lose.  I have to give them credit because somehow they made that into multiple long worded essay like blogs on facebook, all within 15 minutes to an hour after the game.

Besides BJ really, who doesn't play anymore, nobody else gives a ****, number of other people posted telling them of course everyone wanted them to lose, they were a bunch of toolbags and ran up the score on teams for no reason, and to just stfu, its mens softball.

Well that's pretty much the story, not really that great.  They were some dooshnozzles though for sure.  I saw this one Jody kid, who also is maybe 5 feet tall, I say kid he's 35 maybe, from their team who I guess did a big rant on facebook in Price Chopper a few days later, he saw me gave me a hey zack...I gave him one of these  >:( :o ??? , if you could combine those three looks along with a stop for a few seconds and move on.  They didn't enter a team this year, and some of the decent guys switched teams, Aaron plays with us out of town, and his in town team beat us last night for instance.

Played a game of that modified today, ball comes in pretty fast, wasn't expecting it lol.  Had to adjust my swing a little bit.  Just hope its not one of those things where I'm either good at one or the other at any given time.

Pitcher took one in the leg though lol

Well, finally played my first game last night. The umps didn't show though so we had to ump ourselves. It's not as much fun that way, but I think everyone called it pretty fairly. I made sure I got everything into the first game....struck out, hit a grand slam, made a couple errors in the field, etc. It was a cold night too. Anyway, I'm hoping I can level out the playing a little. It was nice to get a homer in the first game, but the guy kind of laid it in there because it was a 3-0 count....I wasn't taking a pitch with bases loaded >:D  What sucks is that the balls are changing (won't go as far), so unless we buy some new super bats, there may be no homers in our future (in mine anyway).
