Turbo, since it would seem you're doing most/all of the programming, what genres would be feasible for you? Are you wanting to improve skills you already have, learn some new ones, or both? I personally think the classic rpg with turn based combat would be the easiest route. In terms of setting, fantasy would be easy. Post-apocalyptic would be fun... Or perhaps post apocalyptic fantasy. I think it would be best to make it a linear adventure with a short narrative. A month doesn't seem like a long development time, seeing as how a lot of us are in school and won't have nearly as much time to devote to this when school does start back up. The simpler the better. If the game turns out well, then there's always the opportunity to make another that's a little more ambitious.

For Shogun, I think it's about 12. Can't remember for sure at the moment. Each faction has unique units and bonuses and start somewhere different on the map. The AI are pretty smart in the harder difficulties, but they are somewhat unrealistic in terms of when they're willing to go to war with you. Some will declare war on you even though, strategically speaking, it makes no sense to. When you're clearly the top dog, everyone will declare war on you since you get negative points in diplomatic relations for every province you conquer. The difficulty is dependent upon a couple different factors. The main one being, obviously, the difficulty setting. Everything above normal will give all of the AI bonuses to money, unit morale, and cut their unit build time. Legendary is stupidly hard, and I have yet to beat it. There's also a lot of variance in terms of starting places. Some starts are extremely difficult due to starting towards the middle of the map and powerful/aggressive neighbors. The unique units play a factor in battles too. The battle AI isn't the greatest, but it's still good.

Yeah I love it. I get my rts and turn based fix from it.
I'll speak in terms of Shogun 2, though they all have some differences (It's really the first one I've sunk a lot of time into). Turns are done by years. To win, you have to control a certain number of provinces by a certain year. The turn order is done sequentially with the player always acting first. So essentially you get to make your decisions, and the game world reacts. In regards to construction, there is one town per province. In that town, there are some default structures there: A stronghold, roads, and a port if the province is on a coast. When you upgrade the stronghold, it gives you another slot for a building of your choice. The types of choices you make would be between something like a stable, thus enabling you to start recruiting cavalry, a dojo to recruit samurai, or a sake den to start recruiting ninjas. In short, buildings give the ability to recruit a new type of unit, increase income, give passive combat bonuses to units recruited in the region, or any mix of said things.

I'd say a turn based and rts hybrid. Building things, raising armies, diplomacy, and planning in general take place in a turn based format. Similar to Civ but with less freedom. You don't have the robust set of diplomacy options you get in Civ, and since the only victory is through conquest, most of the time you're going to end up at war with everybody anyway. The map is always the same given that it uses real world places, so you don't get to pick and choose where your cities are located either. The battles are actually in RTS form though, so battles actually have a skill factor rather than just superior planning or numbers. Imo, you get the best of both worlds. You get the long term planning and strategy like Civ, but you get the action of something like Age of Empires.

Chances are that you won't be having tons of fun with your first job, so try not to think about having standards  (Though I don't blame you for not wanting to work at Mcdonalds. Bleh) Turd has a good point about temp agencies. I currently work at a decently nice hotel while going to school, and we occasionally have to use temps on weekends and whatnot. We actually have a temp we use right now that we're trying to convince to work at the hotel after she has fulfilled her requirements at the temp agency. Point being that you probably won't have an awesome first job, but you never know where things may lead. Good luck
